"Rework" Job Travelers/ISO compliance

Rework to us generally means returned material. I've reworked the RMA
module to generate both corrective action pages (D8) and a Non conforming
Material Report. The department doing the rework doesn't start until the
NCMR is received and they follow the instructions. The return the NCMR to
Quality so the returned material can be dispositioned. We've been through a
pile of audits and that has never been an issue. (QS9000).

Our procedure requires only approved personnel to be permitted to make
changes to the routings, and for us this means engineering staff only. We
also include a procedure with the material review, where the rework is
defined by the process engineer. Between the 2 we have not had any problems
with audit findings in that area.

On a recent Quality Audit, we were given a Nonconformance for not having
separate and unique "rework" job travelers that are distinct from our
normal templated job detail. I explained that the "Added Operation"
feature in Vantage serves to uniquely identify which operations were
added on top of the original template. Apparently that doesn't satisfy
the requirements for document control since the individual making the
changes has free reign over adding, deleting or modifying the detail.

Has anyone out there had to deal with this? I'm also curious to hear
anyone's thoughts as to whether this is truly a Document Control
Nonconformance or if the Added Operation feature should suffice.

Thanks,
