If this is a repeat customer, I'd suggest leaving this as credit on their account for future orders. However, if you need to absolutely cut them the check, then this is now a payable its officially a accounts payable "vendor" setup. You will then need to record the payment etc./cash in A/R accordingly.

Subject: [Vantage] Reversing an Advance Deposit on Sales Order
The deposit on a sales order was more than it should have been so I
need to re-imburse the customer. My advance billing balance report
shows the amount due the customer correctly ($100.46); and an advance
Deposit credit memo will clear that amount. Now a check must be cut
to the customer. Is there another way besides adding the customer as
a vendor to cut them a check? Has anyone encountered this? If so
what is the best method to re-imburse the customer?
