Subject: RE: [Vantage] Retitled: 5.2 to 6.0 or 6.1

For me 6.0 to 6.1 was virtually nothing and if you are already doing 5.2 to
6.0 it would be even less additional work because many of the "after" steps
(like reinstalling clients) would be a wash.

Julie Lehmann at Mercury Minnesota had sent me some very handy tips that
helped me greatly (my comments in() ):
A) The Progress Patch to 91D08 can be installed well in advance and works
with 6.0.
(Note: in your case just patch all the way to 91D08 when you isntall
9.1D - so essentially no extra time)
B) 6.1 can be installed on server in advance as well (a good point at
which to set DB settings too)
(I installed 6.1 to the MFGSYS61 folder several days in advance of
the cutover)
C) Then just procopy the DB, repoint the users to 61 and 1st time log-in
fire up the change schema and conversions
(basically just moving the DB to the mfgsys61/db folder - a few
minutes?)

So the "added time" for 6.1....a few minutes.
Added benefit...being on the "latest" pre-8 version and the only one Epicor
really wants to support (or has everyone familiar with) really helps.
Unless you are using CRM there would be little or no user impact except for
some odd and easily fixed font issues that affect some screens as related in
a post-6.1 posting I made:
---------
The new DB was missing all my optimizations. Duh! Should have thought
about that. Main problem is -n parameter issue for number of users is less
than our licensed number. I should have matched all the DB settings from
mfgsys60 to mfgsys61. Something not mentioned in the install guide. I had
to set them and shutdown/restart DB at lunchtime the day after the switch -
if I had copied them down and entered them all would have been well.

The new fonts are horrible. You can reset them in one of the ini files
rightafter the upgrade.

Even if going just to 6.0 double check your backup routines for proper
paths.

Crystal reports will need to have location repointed to mfgwrk61 on the
client and database analyzed then save each report. Caution...save any
customized reports in a safe location for moving to new Userfiles folder
(after 1st preserving native 6.0 or 6.1 versions, just incase).

But really, there is very little extra work to go all the way to 6.1 and
lots to gain.

Thanks for the input! I really would like to, but I'm not sure how much
longer that will take, and we are kind of server critical at this point!
Any idea on how long the conversion took from 6.0 to 6.1?

Sorry this is not related to the job listing, but I recommend you consider
jumping right to 6.1.
