Restoring Live MFGSYS into TEST database on Progress/Vantage 8.0

One other handy tip, if you have BPMs and such running, then you should
delete the contents of the BPMExec/Pilot folder and copy the contents of the
BPMExec/Live folder over to the BPMExec/Pilot folder so you don't need to go
through and diable/enable all the BPMs again to get them working in the new
database.

Backing and restore 8.00 / 8.03 Database

1. Go to the database server

2. Go to Start>Programs>OpenEdge 10.0D>Proenv

3. at the cursor please type prompt so you know in which folders you are in,
IF you are on a different drive other THAN "E"

Then follow to step 4 otherwise go to step 5

4. Type: CD .. and press enter. This should take your prompt outside of the
first folder Type letter E:

This will take you out of the current drive and take you to E

5. Now type cd Epicor\mfgsys803\db press enter. Your prompt should now
read: E:\ Epicor\mfgsys803\db >

6. Type:

probkup online mfgsys E:\epicor\test803\db\backup.new

(The red is the command to do the back up, the black is the name of the DB
we want to back up, the blue will be the path where we want the db to be
sent and backup.new will be the name)

You should see information on the DOS screen while the system backs up your
database. When the prompt returns, the backup is complete. Go through
Windows>Explore to find the backup.new file - it should be in the
E:\epicor\test803\db

Ok once we have backed up the PRODUCTION Database

We are ready to go to the process number 2

To restore a database on a test DB

Process 2

At this point we still have open the proenv OK ?

Now we want to go to this following path E:\epicor\test803\db

At the cursor type prompt so you can confirm you are in E:\
Epicor\mfgsys803\db >type CD..

This will take you out of bd, ok ?

Now type cd.. this will take you out of mfgsys803 ok

Now at the cursor type prompt and will say you are in E:\epicor> type
test803 enter

Type cd db enter

Now you are in E:\epicor\test803\db> type

prorest mfgsys backup.new

This will start the process of restoring the Production Database that we
backed up on a test enviroment

IF you have any prior back up that you want to use, just follow the process
2 and change the name of backup.new for the name of the prior production
back up

Progress/Vantage 8.03

Hello All,

Could anyone give me a quick step by step on what is involved in taking a
recent backup of the MFGSYS Progress DB and restoring it into the TEST DB on
Vantage 8.03. Our DB guy here says this is a MAJOR undertaking and shouldn't
be done. I can't hardly believe that but since I am very NEW to Progress (I
have a MS SQL/DB2 background), I cannot speak intelligently about it so I
thought I would ask here. I can't be the only guy who wants to have a recent
version of the live database put over into TEST so we can play with it.
Please let me know and THANKS IN ADVANCE for your help!

Mike...
Super easy, takes 2 commands.
This will backup on your production database (don't even need to take it
offline):
probkup ONLINE mfgsys mybackup.bu

This will restore it into the test:
prorest mfgsys mybackup.bu
Note, you test DB needs to be offline for this. Also, make sure you move
the 'mybackup.bu' file you created into the same folder as your test DB and
run this command from that location.

You will also need to edit the System Agent. Update the port numbers of the test appservers, so that your print jobs work in test. Once updated, restart the test appservers.

I add another step. I go into all companies and enter ***TEST*** in front of the company name. A quick glance at the bottom of my screen tells me where I'm at and all reports w/company name are clearly from test data. I spend more time in a test database than I do in our live one!

It can take a bit of time. Oftentimes your TEST/PILOT environments are not
set up as robust (less available Progress servers in each appserver). I'm
sure Progress is also doing some sort of initialization. ?

The sequence to start everything:

1) Database "Databases\MfgTest803"

2) Main appserver "AppServer\MfgTest803"

3) Task appserver "AppServer\MfgTest803TaskAgent"

4) Process appserver "AppServer\MfgTest803ProcessServer"

Reverse the sequence when bringing it down.

As I'm bringing up the server, during steps 2-4 above, I don't fire off the
next one until I'm sure the previous appserver is active. Right click on
the appserver and look at Status. Make sure the Broker Status = ACTIVE
before continuing on to the next step.

Hey Mike,

One thing I typically do before I start the DB and AppServers is to truncate the "bi"/"b1" file. If the backup comes with a large "bi"/"b1" file I have seen it take a long time to start the DB. I pretty much follow everyone's advise here with the addition of the truncation...actually doing one now.

Hey Jeff, Can you point me in the direction of the best place to find step by step instructions on truncating the b1 file? That is something that we have never done. What is the purpose?

Thanks in advance.

I pretty much follow everyone's advise here with the addition of the truncation...actually doing one now.

Turn the DB off and run the following command from the directory that
contains your DB:
proutil -C truncate bi mfgsys

Virginia, I actually have a written instruction for this and will forward it to you off list. If anyone else is interested I can post it to the group.

Not sure if I can do the definition justice, but the b1 file is a transaction file, similar to a log file. It is my understanding that this file should increase and decrease on its own. However, sometimes it can grow out of control and not shrink. This then consumes disc space and, as I mentioned, does seem to contribute to problems with starting your DB. I recently found my b1 file over 13GB, which was a first for me.

Jeff
