Report Builder Connectivity

If you save the file after filling out the database param's, then it will remember them next time. I leave the 'prompt always' on all the time and just click OK past it. It should remember the previous changes when you save the file.

Thanks to Wayne, Troy & Patrick - Primary issue was I had service name as 'epic51' and it needed to be 'epic51trn'. Then when I took Wayne's suggestion and set 'prompt always', it made change DB easier.

But must I always fill out "database connection" dialog? I can't "save" previously setup choices?

This board is a great education!

For Report Builder reports, if you are running them from within Vantage
(from a menu icon or report links) Vantage ALWAYS overrides any DB
connections specified in the report and uses the same DB you're currently
running from. So you can use the same reports in a live & test DB with no
problems. You really don't need to update any of the connection stuff when
you do version upgrades either (just make any updates related to DB schema
changes.)

Within R.B., you need to have the correct service and hostname
specified. Setting "DB Connections = Prompt Always" in Options ->
Preferences is helpful. For the DB Name, the only significant part is
"vantage.db" - the drive letter and path are ignored and can be left out
(unless you're running a stand-alone installation)

New user to Vantage still in implementation. Trying to create some test reports in both Report Builder and Crystal Reports and use data from a TEST database. But despite my setting up "connection" to test database and using tables from test database (at least that is what table reference says), DATA in report is still coming from the default LIVE database - and that database has no transactions yet!

What am I doing wrong? And is every report tied to a SPECIFIC database and needs to be rebuilt for a new database (like when we upgrade to another Vantage version)?

Check the service name.

Bob,
Welcome to the Club! The most important part of the connection to a database (I have heard) is the service name. If you live database uses 'epic51' for the service name, your test database might be using 'epic51trn' or something like that. The services file on your PC should have each Vantage service listed at the bottom, including a port number. You can find this file by doing a search for "services" on your PC and opening it with Notepad.

In answer to your second question. You don't have to redo reports for the live database, just change the service name (and host name if applicable).

Yes, take back off the "prompt always", and it will save the last one.
