Refresh Test Database (Automatically) LES TINGLEY

Hi
I don't have these files anymore, but perhaps someone else knows the commands to start and stop the Progress Explorer from a batch file. If not, You should be able to obtain something from Epicor's excellent Tech support department.

Scott, Les, and the peanut gallery,

I finally got around to testing this automated refresh of Test
Database. After looking at samples from several people I finally landed on
the solution below. (I used Procontrol, remember, so this may be different
if you use Progress Explorer. I don't know.) For some odd reason, certain
batch files would die after the restore part without restarting the test
database again. The batch file below seems to do the whole process without
stopping after the restore.

Tester's NOTES:
A. the "y.txt" file reference refers to a text file that simply has the
letter y ("y") in it along with a Carriage Return. This supplies the
necessary answer "y" to the question of whether you want to stop the
database in one instance, and overwrite the current database in another
instance.
B. I have a 'rem' statement in the section to do a backup online of the
live database, but I didn't need it (or test it) so I left it there for
future reference. Someone can try it if they want to.
C. Credit goes to Les Tingley, Terry Williams, and Jay Erickson for pieces
of the puzzle.
D. I received some bathc files from Jay Erickson that should work for
Progress Explorer (including updating the icons in the interface) if anyone
is interested.

I know a number of you Vantage users keep a current copy of their database as a Test version on the side. Has anyone automated this process to do so on a daily/weekly basis?

You would need to automate the Shutdown of the database, then restore from a backup copy, then start the database back up again. It would be nice to also update the Company name with the current backup date as well.

Any ideas?

You might try automating it by doing a restore from the progress backup of
the live database. I also like to change my FAVORITES BAR background color

The problem I have is automatically starting/stopping the database to do the restore. I already have a batch file to restore from the Live backup. There was a thread recently (that never reached conclusion) about starting/stopping the database from a batch file. That is the missing link here.

Actually, you should be able to do this without starting and stopping.
First schedule the backup command:

\path\progress\bin\probkup online vantage \path\vntgtrn\db\vantback.bu (run
this from vantage directory)

Second schedule the restore some time later:

\path\progress\bin\prorest vantage vantback.bu (run in training directory)

That should do it.

Troy,
I would agree with Patrick, you could set this up using all .bat files. You
could stop and start the services by creating .bat files, and use AT
commands to schedule in NT4.0, but why not use the "online" backup feature?
I can send you samples of .bat files to stop and start services, that I used
when we were on 8.3. The same logic should still apply on 9.1c. I've been
wanting to do the same thing, but it hasn't been high on my list. I might
just bump it up, now that you've got me thinking about it.

You would have to have the training database stopped to do the restore, and then start it after the restore is complete, wouldn't you? I would like to know how to Stop the training database from the batch file so that the restore process will work.

Les,
I would love to see the batch files to stop/start the test database. That would be a real key here in this process.

One additional step:: is there a way (other than a keystroke macro) to rename the test database company name to something other than our Live database. This would at least flag a stray printout that it's not REAL, and help the user see which database they are on.

I have an automated batch file to shut down our backup training database and
restore a copy of the backup. Here is the command I use for the shutdown.

<progress path>\proshut <vantage path>\db\vantage -bn

Can someone please post the command to start the database?

Although it is highly discouraged isn't it possible to write to the database
(via ODBC) using Access? Could a macro be created to connect and overwrite
the Company Name in the Company table? Maybe to set the favorites bar color
too? I don't think there would be too many other "links" to a name field so
corruption risk would be minimal. And you would be trying it in a test
database anyway.

Les,
I would love to see the batch files to stop/start the test database.
That would be a real key here in this process.

One additional step:: is there a way (other than a keystroke macro) to
rename the test database company name to something other than our Live
database. This would at least flag a stray printout that it's not REAL, and
help the user see which database they are on.

Troy,
I would agree with Patrick, you could set this up using all .bat files.
You
could stop and start the services by creating .bat files, and use AT
commands to schedule in NT4.0, but why not use the "online" backup
feature?
I can send you samples of .bat files to stop and start services, that I
used
when we were on 8.3. The same logic should still apply on 9.1c. I've been
wanting to do the same thing, but it hasn't been high on my list. I might
just bump it up, now that you've got me thinking about it.

Sorry Troy, misunderstood. Use the proserve.bat and proshut.bat commands to
start and stop the database. Search the Progress help file for all the
parameters you can use. Usually the startup parameters are just created in
a .pf file. This can probably just be the normal startup.pf that Vantage
uses.

You would have to have the training database stopped to do the restore, and
then start it after the restore is complete, wouldn't you? I would like to
know how to Stop the training database from the batch file so that the
restore process will work.

Actually, you should be able to do this without starting and stopping.
First schedule the backup command:

\path\progress\bin\probkup online vantage \path\vntgtrn\db\vantback.bu
(run
this from vantage directory)

Second schedule the restore some time later:

\path\progress\bin\prorest vantage vantback.bu (run in training directory)

That should do it.

I know a number of you Vantage users keep a current copy of their database
as a Test version on the side. Has anyone automated this process to do so
on a daily/weekly basis?

You would need to automate the Shutdown of the database, then restore from
a
backup copy, then start the database back up again. It would be nice to
also update the Company name with the current backup date as well.

Any ideas?

Scott, Les, and the peanut gallery,

I finally got around to testing this automated refresh of Test Database. After looking at samples from several people I finally landed on the solution below. (I used Procontrol, remember, so this may be different if you use Progress Explorer. I don't know.) For some odd reason, certain batch files would die after the restore part without restarting the test database again. The batch file below seems to do the whole process without stopping after the restore.

Tester's NOTES:
A. the "y.txt" file reference refers to a text file that simply has the letter y ("y") in it along with a Carriage Return. This supplies the necessary answer "y" to the question of whether you want to stop the database in one instance, and overwrite the current database in another instance.
B. I have a 'rem' statement in the section to do a backup online of the live database, but I didn't need it (or test it) so I left it there for future reference. Someone can try it if they want to.
C. Credit goes to Les Tingley, Terry Williams, and Jay Erickson for pieces of the puzzle.
D. I received some bathc files from Jay Erickson that should work for Progress Explorer (including updating the icons in the interface) if anyone is interested.

Question to Window2000Server or Progress Experts...

The batch file below works fine on my Win200Pro laptop. But when I run it on our live server for our test database, I get the following message during the SHUTDOWN phase of the batch file:

11:40:04 BROKER : Event Logger error 997: Could not post a 'VANTAGE_PROGRESS' event to the Event Viewer. (5180)

If I clear the event viewer, it will run the next time, but not the time after that (have to clear the event viewer again). I don't think the Event viewer is not full because it only has a couple hundred entries, whereas it can hold many more than that.

Any ideas?

Troy,

You can manually change the max size of log file. It is under the File
menu in Event Viewer.

Les,
I got the files, but haven't had a chance to try it yet. I'm hoping
tomorrow when I can get on our test database I'll try it out. I'll be sure
to let ya'll know.

Hi Robert,
I supplied Troy with Bat files to stop and start his services, which
seemed
to be the way that he wanted to proceed with this. I haven't automated my
Test DB yet, I thought I would wait and see how he made out. Troy are you
out there? - Les
