Raw Stock Inventory

What we have done is, to figure how much we are actually using as opposed to
how much we thought we would need. So if we buy a bar (144") and cut it
into 7"
pieces, you'll get about 20 parts from it, plus a little extra. We still
issue
the whole bar to the job. I felt if the job consumed the bar and the drop
is too
small to be used for something else, we should show the job consuming it
all.
Or if you plan to use half the amount, make sure that Vantage is told how
much
was really used, so the drop left in inventory is accurate. The kicker is:
your
personnel MUST communicate what they are doing, or you have to hound them to
pass the info along.

Does anyone else have suggestions.

Thanks,

Subject: RE: Raw Stock Inventory

Here is my two cents: We use conversions from purchase pounds to stock
inches or feet to inches for raw material and it seems to work. The problem
is that many cut to length material are standard lengths which creates drops
that stay in inventory. Cycle count corrections can be completed, but I was
wanting to get it charged automatically to the job.
In the job, there is a scrap factor which I though was great. We clicked the
radio button to inch instead of percentage in the BOM thinking that if a
standard length is 144" and the actual part requires 142", we would enter 2"
in scrap so the job gets charged 2" drop and purchase suggestions show
accurate requirements. We found out later that scrap did not multiple times
the requirement when linked to the job. Meaning that if the finished part
requirement was for two, the raw material requirement would increase to 284"
and the scrap would stay at 2". Maybe I'm missing something in a job shop
environment.

We are setup here with a mechanical engineer. One of his
responsibilities is to create M.O.M.s. At the time the MOM is created,
the material requirements are entered. For example, he will enter a
requirement of 11.70" ea. of 6061T62.001.00 (T6 Aluminum 2.0" wide X
1.00" thick X 1.0" long), as our stocking unit of measure is 1.0" (is
this flawed?). He wishes to have purchasing purchase 142" length bars.

When the job requirement is generated for 100 pcs, a purchase
requirement is created for 1170" of 6061t62.001.00. The problem we are
going over is; Using Vantage, how do we communicate to purchasing that
the each part uses 11.7" of material, and the ideal length to purchase,
in this example, is 142" lengths of the 6061T62.001.00 material?

To further complicate the issue, we could put the purchase conversion in
as .1963 lbs (.1963 lbs / 1.0" of 6061T62.001.00). Purchasing would
then receive a suggestion of 229.671 lbs (.1963 * 1170) of
6061T62.001.00, and would still need to determine the ideal length for
this particular job.

Hi.
First, I never liked the weights. We always use particular lengths in
our requirements and changing all that to a weight seems to complicate
the inventory needlessly.

So for your other question, there is a button in the part master,
look for Inv/Purch, in there is a Purchasing section, and a Minimum
can be entered. Put your 144" there, and when a purchase is being made for
the material, you can see the Minimum in the top right corner of the field.

The software is deficient in this area, as there could be a lot more
purchasing
information loaded in the system for each part number. It is apparent the
programmers are not purchasing on a daily basis. Order Minimum is a start,
but there
is standard packaging to be considered, too. Which in this case would
apply,
because you would order full bars of Aluminum, 144" or 288", not 72" or
189".
I better not get started on the Purchasing wish list.

If you change the unit of measure (inventory and purchasing) from EA to IN
the PO is fairly clear to the vendors. You can also change the Factor from
1.00 to .0833, the system will calculate a 12"= 1 Ft, and you'll get the
Feet to show on the purchase order quantity, while you see the inches in
your inventory. Remember to change vendor unit of measure to FT. The
"Factor" can be a little tricky, but you get used to it.

We don't use this feature a lot. But that's the basic gist. Others may
have more info for you.

Hope this helped.
