Printing Problems

We have several instances where attempting to print in Vantage is crashing
the pc. Operating systems are Win98se and WinXP on the pc's. This seems to
have gotten worse as we upgrade the Win98se machines to WinXP. This is
happening several times a day on multiple machines. The printers are
network laser printers. Not a lot to go on but does this ring a bell with
anyone?

The WinXP boxes were clean installs where we wiped the drive and installed
fresh. The Win98se boxes have run Vantage for several years now. The
servers are Win2k.

hey Mitchell,

If you check the history you'd find several instances of the same problem.
WinXP seems to be the problem. I had one machine that was doing that same
thing and I just wiped it all clean last week and installed Win2000 and the
problem went away. I know some people are pointing at possible driver
conflicts but I don't think so...I think it is in the spooler.exe where the
problem is happening. Just my experience.

Good Luck,

I saw that it was happening from previous posts. I didn't really see a
solution. Wiping 5 fresh installs of XP and loading Win2K is not a choice

Mitchell,
Sorry I've tried numerous ones and none worked. I haven't seen anyone else
ever get this to work with XP. Good Luck.

On our local clients the only problems I've had with printing are when users
are attempting to print to smaller printers such as deskjets. When they
attempted to do this the report was either corrupting and printing out wrong
or Vantage was crashing with a Prowin.exe error. This even happened with a
newish HP DJ 4122 with up to date drivers. Changing the printer to one of
our Laserjet 4100's fixed the problem.

I was having a printing problem after upgrading several machines to
WinXp. They would try a report and get an error 0 with a Red X. It
ended up being a problem in the registry with permission to the ODBC Key
under HKLM/Software/ODBC. After fixing the permissions and making sure
that the vantage.vtg file had the correct version of ODBC they were
printing just fine. Not sure if this helps or not....

If you get Error 0 when printing in XP then that's an indication that ODBC
had run out of connection. Since we don't use ODBC (from local machines),
we simply REM out the 4 ODBC lines in Vantage.vtg, and that fixes the
problem

i.e.

;VantageODBCServer=Progress91D
;VantageODBCDbse=vntgtest52
;VantageODBCUser=sysprogress
;VantageODBCPasswd=sysprogress

I was having a printing problem after upgrading several machines to
WinXp. They would try a report and get an error 0 with a Red X. It
ended up being a problem in the registry with permission to the ODBC Key
under HKLM/Software/ODBC. After fixing the permissions and making sure
that the vantage.vtg file had the correct version of ODBC they were
printing just fine. Not sure if this helps or not....

On our local clients the only problems I've had with printing are when
users
are attempting to print to smaller printers such as deskjets. When they
attempted to do this the report was either corrupting and printing out
wrong
or Vantage was crashing with a Prowin.exe error. This even happened
with a
newish HP DJ 4122 with up to date drivers. Changing the printer to one
of
our Laserjet 4100's fixed the problem.

hey Mitchell,

If you check the history you'd find several instances of the same
problem.
WinXP seems to be the problem. I had one machine that was doing that
same
thing and I just wiped it all clean last week and installed Win2000
and
the
problem went away. I know some people are pointing at possible driver
conflicts but I don't think so...I think it is in the spooler.exe
where
the
problem is happening. Just my experience.

We have several instances where attempting to print in Vantage is
crashing
the pc. Operating systems are Win98se and WinXP on the pc's. This
seems
to
have gotten worse as we upgrade the Win98se machines to WinXP. This
is
happening several times a day on multiple machines. The printers are
network laser printers. Not a lot to go on but does this ring a bell
with
anyone?

The WinXP boxes were clean installs where we wiped the drive and
installed
fresh. The Win98se boxes have run Vantage for several years now. The
servers are Win2k.

Before you try the registry hack Brandon mentions, try giving everyone or
just the user affected full rights to the local VNTGWRK folder on that pc's
Hard Drive.
I do this as a matter of practice on all new XP installs and it has
prevented many problems.
I am finding that many, many XP problems are permissions related.

Before you try the registry hack Brandon mentions, try giving everyone
or
just the user affected full rights to the local VNTGWRK folder on that
pc's
Hard Drive.
I do this as a matter of practice on all new XP installs and it has
prevented many problems.
I am finding that many, many XP problems are permissions related.

Let's see if I can remember the details....

Logged on as admin to the workstation and set the permission on the
registry key HKLM\Software\ODBC\ODBC.INI\Progress91D to Everyone Full
control. I then deleted the registry key.

After deleting the registry key, I un-installed Progress from the
workstation. Reboot, and reinstall Progress. I then made sure that
after logging on as the user, I could access the registry key listed
above.

I then made sure that the vantage.vtg or whatever startup file you use
had Progress91D as the ODBC driver... after that everything worked like
a champ...

I just gave up and added the group Domain Users to the Local Administrators
Group. Every time I turned around Windows 2000 and XP had an issue with
some program because of permissions.

I have an HP LaserJet 3300 copier printer is our shipping area. At least
once a day or more it refuses to print when sent a picking ticket from
Vantage. The printer has a stand alone print server connecting it to the
network. I replaced the print server and updated all of the drivers.
Didn't help.

I replaced the PC in customer service where the picking tickets are
generated. This is the only PC that prints to the HP. New machine,
installed all patches of WinXP, new install of Vantage. Left the user with
domain admin rights to eliminate any possible security issues. It will fail
to print the first time or it will run all day and just quit. No error
messages, nothing. The jobs just fail to print. Power down the print
server, power down the HP printer and it still won't print. It will print a
test page from control panel/printers all day long. Will not print from
Vantage once it stops, continues to print WinXP test pages.

The only thing that works is to reboot the PC in question. Same way with
the old PC. You had to reboot to get a printout. The only thing I have not
replaced is the HP and/or Vantage. They are both on my list of things I am
feed up with at this point. The servers run W2K, both at the latest patch.

The other common complaint from the users is that WinXP/Vantage 6.0
combination crashes a lot more than the Win98SE/Vantage 5.1 ever did.
Vantage 6.0 is at the current patch.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried deleting all files in the PC's Vantage Work folder. I had a couple users with similar issues and created an icon to a .bat that deletes everything from it and they work much better. Sometime when it is in "failing to print" mode instead of rebooting try emptying the work folder and see if that helps.

Also worth a try is the most basic LaserJet driver - I've had godd success with the HP-II driver.

Is the problem Crystal, Progress or RB (or all three) from Vantage?

I know I've seen an old message or two about this (some mine!) so I'll do a search.

Mitchell,
1. I agree with Todd, check the Vantage working directory.
2. "Domain Admin"???You must really trust this person. Local admin
should be more than sufficient.
3. "crashes a lot more"??? This should be investigated. I stopped
accepting random crashes after versions 5.0. I investigate every time
now, and they are very few and far between (Vantage 6.1). I would check
the network connection. Vantage should not be crashing often at all
unless the user is doing something specific to cause it (not waiting for
a record in use to be released and clicking the ok for instance). I
would expect that finding the cause of the frequent crashes will solve
the printing problem as well.
Good luck,

I have the same problem on a label printer. I have found that when it stops
printing from Vantage it will still print from any other windows
application. I created a batch file to delete the files in the vntgwrk52
folder. When the problem starts the user can clean these files and the
printer will start working again. This is Vantage 5.2.321 and XP Pro. I
also have a similar problem on another XP box running Vantage. When they
print to the line printer (Genicom 4810) and then switch back to the laser
printer (HP 4100) it will sent the output to the line printer using the
laser print driver. After cleaning the Vantage working folder out it prints
correctly. I haven't had time to ask Vantage support about this.

Try loading (the XP to) (pick an old laserjet driver) instead of trying
newer drivers. I had a similar problem and solved it using anoriginal
Laserjet driver.

Same theory works with Inkjets too.

I was desperate when I used the "domain admin". It helps that it's a small
company and most of my users don't have the time or knowledge to play with

Sorry for the late reply, One thing I've discovered is that after running OS
updates on XP machines the local firewall gets Turned on. Check to see that
the workstation does not have an active firewall.

Vantage 6.0 is at the current patch.

Any suggestions?

Kirby,

Are you printing directly to the printer/printserver using IP or other protocol ?
Or are is there a print queue on a server that redirects the job to the printserver ?

If direct and using TCP/IP see if there is a timeout value in the driver configuration at the workstation.
Also, check and see if bi-directional printing has been enabled and any type of "advance communication" to the printer at the workstation.

Make the configuration as basic as possible.

If using a queue on the server - then check all of the above at the server configuration for the printer.

Charles

Subject: [Vantage] Printing Problems
