Printing problems

I installed the drivers for XP and Win98 on the server. The queue is on the
Vantage server. Both servers run Win2K. I will nose around and see if I
can find where the permissions for the queue are located.

Have you installed the XP versions of the printer driver on the
Vantage Server. We've had some issues printing from XP clients when
we had older drivers on the server. They would just seem to lock up
with no error. Putting the XP drivers on the server solved the
problem for us.

Hello out there! I have a strange problem I hope someone can shed some light on. We are using a HP LaserJet 5 SI. Within the printer setup buttons I have told the printer that tray 1 (manual feed) is preprinted, tray 2 is plain, and tray 3 is color (we print our travelers on yellow paper). I've set up a couple computers so that depending on the printer choice they make (printer driver setup) that it will print on the paper they want. I had to setup up the printer drivers by type (preprinted, plain, color etc.) instead of by tray number. I have one computer that won't play by the rules. It will print just fine out of Excel. It will print a canned report out of Vantage, no problem. When I print a Custom Report (Report Builder) out of Vantage, the printer tries to send it to the preprinted tray. What happens is that the report doesn't print so you go to the printer to see the red light flashing. The printer message asks you if you want to print on plain instead? Or you can push the button again and it will ask if you want to print on color instead?

We are using Compaq Deskpro 400 and the Vantage version is 3.00.628. I've tried using the HP LaserJet 5SI print driver and I've tried using the HP Laserjet Series III.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try looking at the printer default settings, I have a lot of users that
will set their printer defaults to "LAST USED" so whatever job was last sent
to the printer are the defaults that will be used. Also, RB wants you to
set up your printer defaults IN THE REPORT itself. I've actually had to
save variations of the same report because I defaulted the printer to a
particular network printer.

Not sure if this is related but I have noticed that if you print preview RB
reports it will not ask you what printer to send to or even pick your
default settings but instead will use the printer in effect on my PC when I
wrote the report. Like that report got "burned in" to the report but only
if you print preview. When people uncheck "Print Preview" they get a
printer selection screen defaulting to their current default printer. So
for routine printing I have advised our people to not preview.

We just changed from 5.1 to 6.0. The Vantage server has a clean install of

demote it from being the domain controller prior to the upgrade due to some
drive problems. The backup server is now the domain controller. As I right

additional domain controller. I figure it can't hurt.

Are you printing to a queue on the server which redirects to the jet direct or directly to the jet direct via IP ?
If printing to a queue where is the queue hosted (Vantage box or the other one)?

The queue is hosted on the vantage server. The connection seemed more
stable when I used to print direct to the jet direct. But that was back on
5.1 when most of the users were on Win98. All of them except me are on
WinXP now. It is easier to let the server handle this than set up each pc
to print directly to the jet direct.

Would printing direct to the jet direct help when the OS is WinXP? Never
tried to set it up this way once we switched to WinXP on the desktop.

I would first check the Security Permissions of the queue on the w2k and make sure "Anybody" can print.
What kind of server is the non-Vantage box - NT, W2K, etc ?
