Poll - Progress or MS-SQL

After working with 6.x and now with 8.x, I would agree that Progress -
by far - is the best choice. Simply for the reason that by using MS-SQL,
Vantage does not support connectivity "natively" to the database. While
this may not be a huge issue, it does add another step if/when you need
to troubleshoot problems. I will say looking at the table structure and
data is much easier with the MS-SQL tools (i.e. Enterprise Manager) than
some of the Progress tools, but still not enough to persuade me to use
or recommend using MS-SQL.

One thing to point out, at Perspectives 2006, Epicor spent a lot of time
promoting SQL Server 2005, but still hasn't changed Vantage to talk
directly to it...they still recommend using Progress.

Any additional thoughts?

Thanks,

Oh, what the heck, it's been 6 months since the last time we did this.

Easy question: If you were going to purchase Vantage as a NEW customer in
the next 30 days would you purchase it based on Progress-DB or MS-SQL? Why?

Not so easy a question really because as a "new" customer I would likely not have much exposure to Progress. Odds are pretty high that if a new site were to have one or more dedicated IT staff they would come in knowing a lot more about SQL Server than Progress. What I have heard from Epicor for awhile now is "go with what you know". Meaning more new sites would end up going with MS-SQL out of ignorance about Progress.

But knowing what I know "now" about Progress if we were a new customer I would go with Progress hands down. Mostly because as a one person IT shop the admin overhead is so low and we do virtually no development beyond simple report writing.

It would interesting to know , what modules require MS SQL Server
database. Am I right in thinking that the advanced quality module
requires MS SQL Server ?

I'd hope that the Progress version of Vantage runs better than the SQL
version.
