Placing Jobs on Hold

While you're waiting for Epicor to address a partial hold on job
enhancement, you might consider directing some of your standard
Vantage reports to a Generic - Text Only Printer Disk File. For
example, a Progress program could read the Time Phased Material
Requirements output, get each job's scheduling priority, eliminate
ones that are "Very Low" and regenerate the report. This doesn't
entail changing Vantage source code yet allows you to utilize their
standard reports in a custom way.

Hello all,

Maybe I am missing something; but is there a way in which a job can be
placed on hold in Vantage where it doesn't generate a material and parts
demand?

I recently took Vantage mgmt over from the person who installed it
originally, and in the past we have placed jobs on hold by simply
unchecking the Engineered and Released boxes in the Job Entry screen.

TIA,

Paul Siebers
What you used to do is what we do. If you really want to keep someone
else with the authority to engineer and release a job, which has
happened to us, we have closed the job. Then when we were sure we were
ready to proceed, we reopened the job.

Have you already started production? If you have and any labor or material
has been issued closing a job will move those costs out of wip into a
suspense or cost of goods sold account. This can cause a lot of problems for
end of the month reconciliations for accounting.

Jim,

Thanks for the input as it will become more important to us as we get
into live accounting in January.
Jim,

Another approach to solve this problem is to change the Description on
the job to state Job is on hold. That way anyone who might thing the
job was just accidentally UN-engineered will see the "JOB-ON-HOLD" note
in the job description. Also, all job status reports will clearly
reflect that the job is on hold.

Is anyone using one of the check boxes to show that it is on hold? You can
set them up for different internal reasons. Use report builder for a listing
of jobs on hold. Definitely want to unrelease so no labor can be recorded
and so it is not on the job queues.

Dina & Vantage group,

I think we are encountering the same problem that you guys did. Your
solution (adding a priority code)was something I was hoping Vantage
would offer, but I didn't see an easy way of implementing it. What
exactly did you do, and how does it affect your operations?
I have figured out I can create a new priority factor in the Scheduling
Priority Codes Maintenance field. The help menu doesn't tell me if I
can use 0 as a factor, which I would be inclined to use. If I can, does
it hold true that the job does no longer generate a demand on materials.
And can people still clock hours to a job on hold? I guess I will be
playing with my Vantage Test Box as well to get more insight in priority
codes...

Well, so much for that idea. I just figured out that the Priority Factor

Paul,

When you UN-engineer a job, there is no longer a demand for the
materials, the job cannot be scheduled, the job will be off all
schedules and priority dispatch reports and no data collection can
occur. We generally put jobs on hold for two reasons. One is the
occasional customer hold. The other is our need to do additional
structuring and/or make drawing changes. When purchase materials are
involved and we want to continue with the buy. We release the job long
enough for purchasing to print the purchase orders and then UN-engineer
it again.

Thanks for the input, Steve...

However, we do things kind of weird here. I am the first one to admit
that and to suffer from it. The problem is that we need a way to place
jobs on hold in such a way that they do not generate a demand on
materials. However, we still have to be able to collect labor to these
jobs. I know it sounds bizar but a few times a month we have a job on
the floor where we are eg. working on a machine's frame in advance, but
the internals are still subject to change. Any suggestions are
welcome... At this point I am also forwarding the problem for review at
Epicor, maybe they can do some custom programming, since I really like
the idea of being able to select a "HOLD" option on the Scheduling
Priority-gauge on Job Entry.

Dina & Vantage group,

I think we are encountering the same problem that you guys did.
Your
solution (adding a priority code)was something I was hoping
Vantage
would offer, but I didn't see an easy way of implementing it.
What
exactly did you do, and how does it affect your operations?
I have figured out I can create a new priority factor in the
Scheduling
Priority Codes Maintenance field. The help menu doesn't tell me
if I
can use 0 as a factor, which I would be inclined to use. If I
can, does
it hold true that the job does no longer generate a demand on
materials.
And can people still clock hours to a job on hold? I guess I
will be
playing with my Vantage Test Box as well to get more insight in
priority
codes...

Paul,

What we do is also unrelease the job and unengineer the job.
But we
were having problems with people thinking someone made a mistake
and
forgot to check the box. So what we did under Schedule Priority
- we
created that states ON HOLD. We also created a bitmap -
which is very noticable that SAYS HOLD. - This seems to have
helped us
- but we do not put that many jobs on hold.

Hope this helps

Paul,

To solve similar problems like you suggested, I leave the job engineered
and released, do a pull and drop on the job scheduling board to put the
assemblies, operations and linked materials out into the future. In
your case the operations and materials can be moved as you see fit by
which operation you link your materials. Start with two assembly
operations for the machine work, one on the machine's frame and the
later operation to work on the machine's internals out in the future.
As you determine what else you need for the internals, you can
UN-engineer the job long enough to add those materials. You can also
move and drop the scheduling so that your materials for the internals
become due just in time for you to begin the internals work.

Thanks for the input, Steve...

However, we do things kind of weird here. I am the first one to
admit
that and to suffer from it. The problem is that we need a way to
place
jobs on hold in such a way that they do not generate a demand on
materials. However, we still have to be able to collect labor
to these
jobs. I know it sounds bizar but a few times a month we have a
job on
the floor where we are eg. working on a machine's frame in
advance, but
the internals are still subject to change. Any suggestions are
welcome... At this point I am also forwarding the problem for
review at
Epicor, maybe they can do some custom programming, since I
really like
the idea of being able to select a "HOLD" option on the
Scheduling
Priority-gauge on Job Entry.

Paul,

When you UN-engineer a job, there is no longer a demand for the
materials, the job cannot be scheduled, the job will be off all
schedules and priority dispatch reports and no data collection
can
occur. We generally put jobs on hold for two reasons. One is
the
occasional customer hold. The other is our need to do
additional
structuring and/or make drawing changes. When purchase
materials are
involved and we want to continue with the buy. We release the
job long
enough for purchasing to print the purchase orders and then
UN-engineer
it again.

Paul,

Sorry I did not get back to you yesterday. Our ISP was down and I did not have access to mail.

Unfortuanately, when I put a job on hold - EVERYTHING on that job is on hold. Material, Labor etc... If we put on job on hold it is because the customer is making changes or engineering needs to make a change - Sorry I could not help any further.
