Perspective

Anyone care to comment on last week's Perspective. What new things
can we expect. What were some of the highlights. All comments
welcome. Thank you.
Joanne,

Here is a quick list.
Look on the Epicor web site now for vantage version 6.0 features. (Beta
Release)
Progress Fathom - Browser based management tool for promon, protools,
backups, alters, etc...
Progress will run on Linix and Epicor will support this. (Word on the street
is it's fast.)
Look on Progress's web site for benchmarking on Linux.
Vantage version 7 due out first quarter 2004 will be an upgrade to our
current architecture and .net / progress based (Project Sonoma).
Avante, Dataflow, ManMan, etc... will be migrating to Sonoma along with
Vantage and Vista.
We will all be give the option of the Sonoma Architecture Starting with
version 7 along with just staying with our current architecture for a couple
of releases anyway.

Overall the conference had a lot of sessions, I think around 250. I saw a
general excitement with the Epicor employees in taking about the products
features and future. More information given out this year and fewer bitch
sessions. With all the plans/direction/information given out I think I may
have walked away with more questions than I started with but that's a good
thing.

With the Manufacturing Group making the money at Epicor and Vantage the main
product to be pulled into Sonoma you can say for now we rule the roost. By
the way Sonoma is like the wine not the truck. (:-)

First - It was a great conference. Lots more people this year, less rah-rah
Epicor general sessions on the first day (but still good corporate info -
just the facts please) and the sessions were very good. With all the
changes coming in Vantage 6.0 and later Sonoma there were several very good
Vantage futures sessions. Too many new features to detail specifically but
in general Vantage will be a lot more flexible and customizable (and more
personalizable too). But as Mark Pladson said; "just because you CAN do it
doesn't mean you SHOULD". I am looking forward to adding the VB form fields
directly to the parent screen (no more jumping to a seperate VB Form screen
unless I want it to).

Long term all of the Epicor Products are moving toward a common architecture
(code name Sonoma) which will use Progress OpenEdge as the underlaying
database and business rules and use .NET web based interfaces as the front
end. This will open up a lot of things such as OS choice (Linux included)
as well as the actual database (Oracle, SQL, etc...). With the front-end
being done with Visual Studio .NET it will be much more customizable (at
your own peril). For other Epicor product users it may be a big conversion
but for Vantage, so they said, it should be pretty much like regular
upgrades (except for having to support web services). Other products will
become "sons of Vantage" so to speak.

Here is a link to press release:
http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/021118/nem009_1.html
<http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/021118/nem009_1.html>

All in all it was well worth attending (as usual) and in particular for the
futures "heads-up".

-Todd C.

I think you might of hit the nail right on the head. Is Microsoft .net going
to be a happy camper with a progress database running on Linux. With the
cost and speed being the obvious reasons to go to Linux this might be the
biggest reason why not.

We do two inventory a year on about 3 million. We only had a variance of
$800.00 last time. Our first Inventory in Vantage was off almost
$100,000.00 If you have other questions you can give me a call.

Dina,

Sonoma was the big announcement at Perspectives. Vantage's future will
be
running on .net with a progress database. It's rewriting the programs in
this new language but still using a progress database.

Sorry for the dumb question.

Joanne,

Here is a quick list.
Look on the Epicor web site now for vantage version 6.0 features. (Beta
Release)
Progress Fathom - Browser based management tool for promon, protools,
backups, alters, etc...
Progress will run on Linix and Epicor will support this. (Word on the
street
is it's fast.)
We will all be give the option of the Sonoma Architecture Starting with
version 7 along with just staying with our current architecture for a
couple
of releases anyway.

Overall the conference had a lot of sessions, I think around 250. I saw
a
general excitement with the Epicor employees in taking about the
products
features and future. More information given out this year and fewer
bitch
sessions. With all the plans/direction/information given out I think I
may
have walked away with more questions than I started with but that's a
good
thing.

With the Manufacturing Group making the money at Epicor and Vantage the
main
product to be pulled into Sonoma you can say for now we rule the roost.
By
the way Sonoma is like the wine not the truck. (:-)

Anyone care to comment on last week's Perspective. What new things
can we expect. What were some of the highlights. All comments
welcome. Thank you.
