Mike -
Confirmed. As long as your SMTP server has a DNS routing setup
to the internet, and you allow relaying, you can SPAM the world
with Vantage alerts. Imagine the possibilities via the Business
Activity Manager where you can program your own alerts based on
system events. You could email suppliers that are late! How
about that customer that is a little tardy on remittance? Or
maybe the fork lift driver that is on the internet checking emails
instead of watching the AMM que. Some executive types might want
to be alerted when the weekly or monthly sales goals are met.
Even better, do you know of anyone you would want to SPAM with
stupid system errors?
Food for thought - has zero calories!

I believe what 6.0 is doing, is to send messages using SMTP vs MAPI as it
had with the older versions. I have not had a chance to fully install 6.0
and test everything yet, but I believe this is what Vantage is doing now.
Microsoft has added this warning message to the MAPI send function with
their security patch to help prevent the spread of e-mail viruses. The
ClickYes program (http://www.express-soft.com/mailmate/clickyes.html) does
work as a get around to this issue but defeats the purpose of the security
patch.
SMTP has some nice functions and I've been working with it a bit. I've
added a SMTP mail screen to our data collection/vantage stations so that
anyone can e-mail a supervisor from any vantage workstation without the need
to have outlook installed or running. We do not use the Vantage global
alerts, instead we run a report automatically every night to list all alerts
and changes for the day into one e-mail and auto send it out to the people
responsible. This works much better for us since there can sometimes be
20-50 alerts generated in one day. So instead of receiving a whole bunch of
single alerts, they'll receive one e-mail the next morning with a list of
everything that happened yesterday. It's not real time live, but I found
people tended to ignore the alerts coming in so often and it just cluttered
their inbox.
Although I'm not sure, but I think SMTP can only work with a direct
connection to a mail server via the TCP port. I have never tried using it
to send messages outside of our mail server. Can anyone using the Vantage
6.0 mail engine confirm this? Can you send an alert to an address other
than one on your mail server? (example: someone@...)

I just updated a user to Outlook 2000 - SP3 and now he is complaining
that
every time he does something Outlook pops up with a warning dialog box
that
states that something is trying to send out email using outlook - Do you
want to allow this? Hit no or if not it will allow this
Isn't there a patch or some setting on outlook that will turn off this
warning message?
