No we do not use the Fast Clock IN/Clock out program. To be honest, I've
never heard of it. The document is on epicors site. Its doc number
2099MPS. If you havent been to the site yet, you will need to setup a
username and password. Its their Eportal Webpage.
If you need any help, let me know.

Jeremy:
We're a new Vantage customer and I was planning to go with the Thin client
setup as you described for data collection on the shop floor - where can I
find the Epicor's document that you describe regarding all of this? Also,
do you use the Fast Clock In/Clock Out custom program I've been hearing
about? If so - any comments?

Thanks alot!

Thin clients and Terminal Services have seriously helped me maintain my
sanity. When we first brought our 20 data collection terminals online it
was all PC's. I couldn't keep up with them they broke so fast. They
always
needed recalibrated(Touch screens). Employees would be playing games on
them or changing settings. Terminal Services is great. I have all of the
data collections PC's setup so that when the thin client is turned on, it
boots directly to the server and starts Data Collections. The user has
nothing else on their desktop and no start menu. All they have is Data
Collections. When they exit data collections, it goes right back into
data
collections. Supervisors all have the standard windows desktop available
from their thin client. Again, I'm able to control what they do and don't
have access too. Epicor has a great document on how to set up Windows
2000
Terminal Services with Vantage. There are a few extra steps but nothing
major.

They run 2 workstations with Virtual Gibbs modeling software out there, so
I
need a reasonably good PC out there... 1G CPU with 512M RAM is sufficient.
But that leaves out using the 4th hand-me-down junkers.

I'll be getting keyboard covers. Already started using optical mice. In
theory that should be less of a problem. We'll see.

The spitting-distance CPU box idea sounds good - and the Cat5 thing.

Shirley-Jeremy - how much trouble is the setup for the terminal server and
thin clients... setting up the server and setting up the client ws's?
It's
new to me, but sounds like a good, cheaper way out. And will that run the
Virtual Gibbs graphics stuff?

Thanks,
Gary

Our smallest Horizontal CNC has 8' x 8' travel, our largest has 25'
travel
in X and 12' in Y. We have machined parts still mounted on the back of an
18 wheeler. Trapping the smoke is not an option. As we upgrade office
computers we recycle the old machines as shop floor computers. The only
function needed is to communicate with the CNC's. There is no data stored
on the drive so no great loss if it dies.

Given the trend by OSHA and the EPA on airborne contaminants I think you
ought to consider trapping the smoke at the machine. That's the route
we
took, along with filtering the coolant to remove tramp oils which really
contribute to the smoke problem. We plumbed outlets to all of the
lathes
and move the filter unit from machine to machine. Grinders have much
bigger
particle sizes and are easier to trap.

We too have the sticky film, it just takes longer to accumulate. At
least
the visible "smoke" is mostly gone.

We have used shop PC's for ten years for data collection. I rarely
loose
a
drive, mostly monitors and mice. The keyboards have clear film covers.
The
units sit out in the open on a two shelf table. The monitor is on top
with
the keyboard and mouse. The CPU is on the second shelf where it gets
some
protection but is still breathing shop air.

Gary,
Cutting fluid is a real problem for us. We built a special
enclosure
with two 4" fans for ventilation. Both fans were set up with screens.
We
found that the screens became 80% blocked in less than a week! We have
16
cnc machines in a 50k sq. ft. shop and they generate allot of coolant
smoke.
Everything in the shop is covered with a sticky film. We are planning
to
run a fresh air line from outside into the enclosure.

The cutting fluid and metal shavings aren't causing your hard drives
to crash. Maybe proximity to a large punch or shear (vibration),
welding equipment or transformer (EMI/RFI), etc.

I thought there was a discussion a few months back about workstation
enclosures for dirty work areas. We have 3 workstations on the factory
floor with 4 CNC machines. The cutting fluid and metal shavings are
destroying the workstations out there (not to mention the CD player in their
boombox). I had another hard drive crash out there last week. Any ideas on
how to protect the workstations?

Thanks.

Gary,

Do you have any office space within spitting distance of your shop location?

There are products that would allow you to put just the
monitor/keyboard/mouse in the shop while the actual CPU/Case is in the
office area.

Along these same lines, there are now devices that you can hook up to a
computer and run the keyboard, mouse and monitor over CAT 5 cable. This
gives you quite a bit of flexibility where you can place the computer and
you can lock the CPU up in a closet. These are used in environments where
there is just too much vibration or whatever for a computer. I've used the
Lindy model, they aren't cheap, but they do work great. In that instance we
had a chemical bath with cyanide that would just kill a CPU in about 2
months.

Here are some links:

If you are loosing computers out there it might be best if you go to
terminal server and neoware boxes. The boxes are "hardened" for factory
environment, no moving parts. So the only "moving" things you would have
would be $12.00 keyboards and $2.00 mice. Neoware boxes are about $600
each.

Thanks.

We replaced 20 floor PC's with Televideo 7020 Thin Clients that run Terminal
Services. The cost for us was $300.00 for the thin Client and $75.00 for
each Microsoft Thin Client Lic. We had PC's dieing every week. I've not
had one issue with the thin clients. They have com, lpt, usb, and sound
ports that seem to work great. They also come with embedded Elo and Micro
Touch support. This is great because we no longer have to calibrate our
touch screen anymore. We also have 10 of the LCD Touch Screen Thin Clients
by Televideo. I love these units. They have worked out great. I think the
cost is $1099.00. I believe the screen size is 15". The employees really
like these units as well. We use them for just data collections so we hung
them on the wall without a keyboard or mouse. Looks very slick when
customers or corporate bigwigs visit.

Our smallest Horizontal CNC has 8' x 8' travel, our largest has 25' travel
in X and 12' in Y.

That's the route we
took, along with filtering the coolant to remove tramp oils which really
contribute to the smoke problem. We plumbed outlets to all of the lathes
and move the filter unit from machine to machine. Grinders have much
bigger
particle sizes and are easier to trap.

We too have the sticky film, it just takes longer to accumulate. At least
the visible "smoke" is mostly gone.

We have used shop PC's for ten years for data collection. I rarely loose
a
drive, mostly monitors and mice. The keyboards have clear film covers.
The
units sit out in the open on a two shelf table. The monitor is on top
with
the keyboard and mouse. The CPU is on the second shelf where it gets some
protection but is still breathing shop air.

Gary,
Cutting fluid is a real problem for us. We built a special enclosure
with two 4" fans for ventilation. Both fans were set up with screens.
We
found that the screens became 80% blocked in less than a week! We have 16
cnc machines in a 50k sq. ft. shop and they generate allot of coolant
smoke.
Everything in the shop is covered with a sticky film. We are planning to
run a fresh air line from outside into the enclosure.

Gary,

The cutting fluid and metal shavings aren't causing your hard drives
to crash. Maybe proximity to a large punch or shear (vibration),
welding equipment or transformer (EMI/RFI), etc.

Wow, I see your problem. If these are only data collection terminals, you
might look at thin clients. We don't use them because our PC's also store
CNC programs and run Works. We do a lot of grinding so the shop is air
conditioned. We don't need a lot of air flow to keep the CPU cool.

Since you built the enclosures yourself, where are the fans located?
Consider exhausting the air on the side and pulling your make-up air through
the bottom of the enclosure. A metal baffle will trap a lot without
requiring filters. A permanent metal baffle (like a permanent furnace
filter) can be cleaned with a hose and doesn't restrict air flow as much as
other types of filters. You need a "real" filter to trap smoke but airborne
coolant falls out in a vertical column of air and settles on the baffles.

They run 2 workstations with Virtual Gibbs modeling software out there, so I
need a reasonably good PC out there...

Thanks,

Thin clients and Terminal Services have seriously helped me maintain my
sanity. When we first brought our 20 data collection terminals online it
was all PC's. I couldn't keep up with them they broke so fast. They always
needed recalibrated(Touch screens). Employees would be playing games on
them or changing settings. Terminal Services is great. I have all of the
data collections PC's setup so that when the thin client is turned on, it
boots directly to the server and starts Data Collections. The user has
nothing else on their desktop and no start menu. All they have is Data
Collections. When they exit data collections, it goes right back into data
collections. Supervisors all have the standard windows desktop available
from their thin client. Again, I'm able to control what they do and don't
have access too. Epicor has a great document on how to set up Windows 2000
Terminal Services with Vantage. There are a few extra steps but nothing
major.

Jeremy,

Sounds very good for this situation. Could save headaches, replacements,
and money on initial purchase. Thanks to you and all for the feedback.

There are a few extra steps but nothing
major.

They run 2 workstations with Virtual Gibbs modeling software out there, so I
need a reasonably good PC out there...

Thanks,
Gary

Our smallest Horizontal CNC has 8' x 8' travel, our largest has 25' travel
in X and 12' in Y.

Gary,

The cutting fluid and metal shavings aren't causing your hard drives
to crash. Maybe proximity to a large punch or shear (vibration),
welding equipment or transformer (EMI/RFI), etc.

have fun,

Thanks,

No we do not use the Fast Clock IN/Clock out program. To be honest, I've
never heard of it. The document is on epicors site. Its doc number

username and password. Its their Eportal Webpage.
