Ot: wireless connectivity

You might want to check out EvDO ( Evolution Data Only ) from Verizon ...
National wireless connections via cell phone infrastructure.

300 kbps to 600 kbps throughput at the low end to 2.4 mbps at the high end.

Verizon is supposed to EvDO rolled out in it's top 30 markets by the end of
the summer.

This would make be forget about WiFi hotspots. With this service I can give
laptops to my outside salespeople and have them on live Internet anywhere
their cellphones work.

Toss in a VPN link back to home base and MS-WTS and you have live Vantage in
a customer's office.

......... Ok, I'll admit it, I just read an article about this about 15
minutes ago .....

Weren't there some folks here using VNC (sort of like PC Anywhere) via cable
modem or DSL (or hotel high-speed internet) to connect via a VPN like
connection? I need to do something similar for a new sales rep as well as
provide myself a way to work from at home and have been contemplating this.
My attempts at pure VPN tunneling thru our firewall all failed.

As far as wireless...that's just one way to connect. Basically sort of high
speed internet service via a cellular phone type connection (or was the
intention 802.11G type via hot spots like Stabucks or airports?). With most
hotels having high speed internet (for a price) it might still be less
expensive than cellular internet access. But Internet access is only half
the battle, the rest is the IP routing stuff to connect securely (and
privately) to your internal network. I would be very interested to know if
VNC handles this and how hard it is to set up.

Thanks for responding Aaron. Well to start off with I am only on 5.0.
Also, I am not sure that wireless is what I am wanting - I dont really
know a whole lot about this. All I know is that the owner wants a connection

set up so that our new salesman can connect to vantage on the road.
I am running NT 4.0 on the server, NT4.0 on a few workstations, and
XP on the rest of them.

So any ideas you can throw my way would be great.

Depending on your Vantage version, 6.1 has the ability to have
"disconnected sales persons". They take a mini version of the database
with them, and sync when they are in the office. You might want to
consider that as an option.
If 6.1 is not an option, you can use terminal server with remote users.
If you only have one, you might consider having an XP box do the
terminal services bit so they can use Vantage.
There are several options, but I would question why you were thinking
wireless?
If you only have DSL currently, you will not be able to run Vantage from
the outside through that connection directly, that would be the reason
for terminal services.

Weren't there some folks here using VNC (sort of like PC Anywhere) via cable modem or DSL (or hotel high-speed internet) to connect via a VPN like connection? I need to do something similar for a new sales rep as well as provide myself a way to work from at home and have been contemplating this. My attempts at pure VPN tunneling thru our firewall all failed.

As far as wireless...that's just one way to connect. Basically sort of high speed internet service via a cellular phone type connection (or was the intention 802.11G type via hot spots like Stabucks or airports?). With most hotels having high speed internet (for a price) it might still be less expensive than cellular internet access. But Internet access is only half the battle, the rest is the IP routing stuff to connect securely (and privately) to your internal network. I would be very interested to know if VNC handles this and how hard it is to set up.

Assuming your salesperson has access to an internet connection the easiest
way for a non-technical person is to set up an account with gotomypc.com.
You will need a spare PC laying around in the office and he can control it
just like 'PC Anywhere' from any internet connection. It is very secure and
simple. He will log into the PC in your office from his remote site like it
was in front of him. Set him and others up with a system ID and password
then add them to Vantage.... You get the picture. Easy, safe and pretty
cheap.

Verizon Wireless (www.verizonwireless.com) carries several types of AirCard
for laptops. I have used these cards in combination with Citrix, and in
must urban areas I get pretty decent speeds, fast enough to work with
Vantage in Citrix without lags.

Ofcourse, you would need NT Terminal Server (Citrix recommended, but not
necessary), a $200 aircard and a monthly subscription to Verzon's Wireless
service ($50/mo).

I guess the question you need to answer first is where is he connecting
from? We use VPN and terminal services to connect several remote locations.
As long as the salesman can get a fast internet connection they can connect
to Vantage. Access from a hotel room was sufficient for us.

We had to change the firewall and do a lot of testing but we finally got it
to work. If you can get a wired connection to work then wireless would be
your next step.

I have gotomypc set up at work all ready for myself and a guy at
my warehouse down the street. I set up a vpn for him, but with a
dsl line and vantage heavy loading, it was virtually worthless.
I then set him up with gotomypc and that was the easy way for my solution,
and set up myself as well to link to my office pc as I do a lot of work
from home. The more I have been thinking about it, gotomypc might just be
the "easiest" and most cost efficient for us, as I am maxed on licenses
right now as well. The salesman could "use" a pc that is rarely used....
thanks for the suggestion, it backed up what I had been thinking all
morning!

Easy, safe and pretty
cheap.

Are you using a wireless connection now at your office to get out to the

internet?

We are looking at hiring a new outside salesman who we would want to
give certain access to vantage while on the road. I really know
nothing about connecting wirelessly to vantage. Can anyone tell me
what I would be looking at/needing as far as software/hardware.

I am running NT server 4.0 if that makes a difference.

Thanks!
