OT - WIN2003 Server disconnects

The problem is this is the server for Solidworks and our quoting software, etc.  They are getting disconnected while they are actively working on something and until I got Thomas's suggestion
to check the "Server Services", I was rebooting the server in order to restore the connections, because they weren't able to access any of the mapped drives to that server any other way.
Sorry if I didn't explain myself very well on the initial post - but it wasn't that they were idle and just couldn't connect when they wanted to - it just dropped every connection mapped to it randomly,
in the middle of what they were doing and would not reconnect whatsoever without a reboot of the server.  As of now I have set the Server Services to restart upon failure and although it's a band-aid,
at least I'm not restarting the server a dozen times a day.

Thanks for taking the time to help!
Julie

WhatÂ’s the actual problem?

I believe the default timeout for a connection is 15 minutes of idle time.

Why do you need them constantly connected? That’s just adding excess overheard network traffic for them to be continually keeping the connection “open”. The drives should automatically reconnect if there is a disconnection and then a request is sent to the drive.

How do you know they disconnect? Is it because of the red x that sho ws up? Does this stop someone from being able to access the drive in some way?

On the server side:

net config server /autodisconnect:-1

Then on the client side, there is a registry tweak you can do, these pages describes it well.

Subject: [Vantage] OT - WIN2003 Server disconnects

Hi everyone:

I have an exasperating issue that I can't seem to figure out.  We have a WIN2003 Server and randomly throughout the day everyone with any and all mapped drives to it loses the

connection (WIN XP & WIN 7).  I can still ping the server & I can Remote into it.  At the server I can reach the internet and the network connection still show packets sending and receiving.

This just started happening last week.  I replaced the NIC card and cable - they both show green activity lights on both ends.  I have tried different ports on the

switch.  I've looked at the NIC car d settings and don't see anything that would have it disconnect if inactive, I temporarily uninstalled AV .   Rebooting the server restores the connections.

Sometimes it lasts 2 hours, sometimes 1/2 hour.  The Event log doesn't shed any light on it either.  I have the Vantage server on the same network and thankfully those connections

are fine and stay connected.  I've googled it until I am blue in the face.

With the wealth of knowledge out there - does anyone have any experience with such a thing or any advice to offer?

Any thoughts or ideas are welcomed and if you prefer to contact me off-list:   jlehmann@...

Thanks for listening!

Morning

I sent you message with a few screenshots off list but the gist of that message is the following.

1.        Open the Services Window

2.       Find the ‘Server’ Service

3.       Restart it.

Are you able to access Vantage from the clients that have lost their mapped drivers, or do the clients lose complete connectivity to the server?
