just to chime in.. saw another similiar item when a path variable was set to a network location - so it was constantly being evaluated (as it was early on in the path variable) and slowing the system down - since the path is used to search for files. In this case the location I believe was down, compounding the issue.

This happened to me once and the problem was that the system couldn't find the
ActiveDirectory server. You first have to endure the time-outs to login and
then again for each item it sets up in the login script. Make sure your DNS is
correct and that this computer is on the domain.
