You shouldn't delete it, but you can move it to a different location,
including a shared network location. The regular windows install loads
a bunch of drivers and related files, so if you add devices or
reconfigure things, it doesn't have to ask for a CD. When you load a
service pack, lots of those installation files are superceded with newer
versions.
I have this directory - \WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386. Can I delete the
ServicePackFiles directory? I need the space on the system partition. We
are on WIN 2K Server, Service Pack 4.

You should be able to delete them without incident.

I would recommend renaming the folder and then reboot just to be sure.

I'm always reluctant to delete something that claims to be an I386 file -- but I have moved them to a different partition without incident in the past.

You shouldn't delete it, but you can move it to a different location,
including a shared network location. The regular windows install loads
a bunch of drivers and related files, so if you add devices or
reconfigure things, it doesn't have to ask for a CD. When you load a
service pack, lots of those installation files are superseded with newer
versions. The directory in question stores ALL the files delivered with
the service pack.

You can lookup microsoft document# 271484, or mail me OFF LIST and I'll
send ya' a copy.

What I did was:
1) Copy all the SP4 files to a network directory,
I:\W2k_sp4_ServicePackFiles\i386

2) Delete the directory from each PC.

3) Load this registry file to point windows to the new location:

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup]
"ServicePackSourcePath"="I:\\W2k_sp4_ServicePackFiles"
