Can I propose a new Surf Control User Group? We can maybe host a
database of everything we find wrong with the product and use the power
of the group to get the bugs fixed and enhancements we want included in
the program.
Just an off the wall idea.

Spectorsoft is great for -a- PC. Even for a home network of 2-5 PC's.
You can install the viewer on a networked PC to view the stash via a
hidden share. If you're interested I'll explain the details.
However, you should know that Spectorsoft is a high end "SPYWARE"
program and every 6-10 months the Anti-Spyware programs on the market
figure out how to find it and disable it. At which time you can
download the current version and leapfrog the competition.
Having said that ... if you want to track EVERY keystroke, IM, email,
webpage etc on a given PC Spectorsoft is insidious. Almost scary.
PERFECT for keeping track of your kids or your spouse. Seriously!
On a business network ... it's so so because of the anti-spyware issue.
Consider something like SurfControl or Etrust instead. These are
products that you would install on a PC that is connected to the same
hub as your internet feed. IE. run a line from your main switch to a
hub that then links to your main firewall. These products -sniff- the
line of all traffic and save a log of who went where. Etrust from CA
(ugh) is a pretty decent product although you can get lost in the
details. Not only does it record whats going on with the traffic it
also actively blocks people from going to some websites while trying to
block intrusions from the outside that get through your firewall.
Complicated product with iffy tech support. Surfcontrol also plays the
same game. I've used an early version of Surfcontrol and a later
version of Etrust. Both had their merits. The later version of eTrust
tracked websites and email. Don't know about Surfcontrol. The early
version of Surfcontrol I used had a nicer interface but did not track
email.
You need to decide what the company want's to know? What web sites
you're employees are going to? How much time they are wasting? Email?
IM? Music? etc?
After 3-4 years of tracking this stuff at a company with 120-300
employees I just got to the point where I hated being the Internet cop.
The political issues just sucked.
Recommendation - down load a trial version of Surfcontrol ... put it on
a PC
... and then instruct your HR manager on how to use it. Let them be
the
nasty person. IT managers take enough crap as is. Given the
opportunity I'd setup the software and delegate the paddle to some one
else.

I have been asked to find a way to log web usage. Not necessarily to
block or control....just log web sites visited and if possible the
amount of time connected. I've used our SonicWall before but it does
not record as much detail as desired....just the total MB transferred by
user. We are trying to pin down some late night high volume usage
possibly related to game
playing (MUDs, etc...) by people supposedly working. Especially by
users
savvy enough to wipe IE history, temp files and cookies. Any
suggestions?

You need to decide what the company want's to know? What web sites
you're employees are going to? How much time they are wasting? Email?
IM? Music? etc?
After 3-4 years of tracking this stuff at a company with 120-300
employees I just got to the point where I hated being the Internet cop.
The political issues just sucked.
Recommendation - down load a trial version of Surfcontrol ... put it on
a PC
... and then instruct your HR manager on how to use it. Let them be
the
nasty person. IT managers take enough crap as is. Given the
opportunity I'd setup the software and delegate the paddle to some one
else.

I have been asked to find a way to log web usage. Not necessarily to
block or control....just log web sites visited and if possible the
amount of time connected. I've used our SonicWall before but it does
not record as much detail as desired....just the total MB transferred by
user. We are trying to pin down some late night high volume usage
possibly related to game
playing (MUDs, etc...) by people supposedly working. Especially by
users
savvy enough to wipe IE history, temp files and cookies. Any
suggestions?
