I like clean installs too, and like Jessee that's what I would recommend as
a first choice. We weren't in a position to do that, due to time and
hardware constraints. As far as the headaches went, it was pretty painless
on the servers - a few permissions problems (but I had to learn how they
worked anyway). The McAfee problems occurred on the workstations. And
considering we upgraded 3 servers and 40 workstations to W2K in 4 days
(including revamping emails and some software installs), I think it went
fairly smooth - although you couldn't have told me that at the time.

I agree! ESPECIALLY for servers. Clean installs for anything (server or
workstation) will save you MANY headaches in the long run and should operate
much faster than if you were to perform upgrades. Low Level format the hard
drive and do a full clean install is my recommendation. May be more work
right now, but I feel its better to do it while no one is using the server
rather than have problems while people are using it.
Just saves a little bit on the cost of Tylenol when you start getting all
those headaches that start up cause of some registry/Anti-Virus mess that
occurred due to an upgrade.
Just my two cents.

One recommendation was to do a clean install to a new domain, and then copy
files over. This is a fairly straight forward network (3 servers - 40
clients), and has no pressing need for Active Directory. Thoughts?

Still applies. Good luck, Todd. Les... I forgot about this stuff. I'm
glad Todd was there to catch it. Good luck.

Gary,
You wrote this awhile back when I had the same question. If it does not
apply any more let me know. I will be finally doing the upgrade of our
Vantage server (now that the other Exchange 2000/Win2K AD server is stable)
in the next few weekends. As soon as I can schedule the consultant. I'll
be sure to be watching over his shoulder learning all I can. -Todd C.
Previous Response ----------------------------------------------------------
After the upgrade, the Vantage print directory needed security settings
loosened (error messages when printing). Security on one other Vantage
directory (I forget which one - it produced an error message) had to be
loosened. After that we were rolling. Then I set up the security as
recommended in the Epicor "Securing Vantage Files with NT Security" document
on their web site (if you don't have that, I can email it to you). No other
problems since then.
PS - If you upgrade ws's (rather than fresh installs), UNINSTALL your
antivirus software. Our McAfee corrupted the registry on some of our ws's
during the process.
