Ot: vpn

Okay
I got my firewall that supports VPN
I have a Sonic Wall Pro 200

I have a laptop that I have installed the VPN Software to

Never been down this road and the manual is a little vague
What do I do next to connect to the network VIA VPN?

Brains just a little fuzzy today

We are looking into configuring a VPN tunnel between our headquarters
and a remote site. We are a relatively small operation. We will have 10
people connection from the remote site and an occasional user connecting
from home. Can anyone offer some guidance to an inexpensive and reliable
solution? Thanks in advance.

Do you currently have a firewall? I have a Cisco PIX 515 that has VPN
capabilities, which we are using. It was 3 DES encryption and can
accommodate as many vpn users as I have licenses (i.e., I have a 100
user license). Otherwise Microsoft has vpn tools and you could also
make inquires to your ISP as they may offer VPN. Hope this helps.

Check out this product http://www.dlink.com/products/broadband/di804v/
<http://www.dlink.com/products/broadband/di804v/>

You can get two of these (one for each site) for less than $300 and use the
Internet to connect both via VPN. For a small site, this is more than
sufficient.

Hope this helps,

This is taking a slight tangent from the previous VPN thread. We are
experimenting with VPN as a remote connection option. My biggest concern
is: When I connect via VPN through our firewall and connect to our network,
I am suddenly unable to visit web pages from home or receive email through
my dial-up account (which is how I am connecting to the VPN.

Does anyone know how to make my local internet access keep working while I
am connected to the VPN, or alternately, to access the web through the host
network on the VPN side of things?

To answer your question, VPN is just traffic on your line. Everything that
is sent from your computer on a network is a packet. Some packets are HTTP
(for the web), TCP (like for Vantage) or VPN. You can have a VPN connection
and still be able to get email and browse the web. As far as accessing the
web through the host network, yes you can do this, but it won't speed up
anything that you do as you are still using the dial-up bandwidth. I've
never liked VPN connections via dial-up. There is a considerable amount of
overhead associated with a VPN connection. It works, but don't expect to be
running Vantage over a dial-up account.

Disclaimer: This is a very short version of how this stuff works. It isn't
meant to be definitive. Just trying to answer Troy's question.

Hope this helps you out Troy,
