OT: Thermal Printers

I will second the vote on Zebra printers. Very good printers once you get
them figure them out.

There are two types of thermal printing (that I know of) :
1. Direct Thermal (DT) - where the heat changes the special paper's color to
black
2. Thermal Transfer (TT) - where you have a wax ribbon that gets melted on
to the label in a pattern

I have used both for different situations. DT here and now where
environment is not a big issue (heat and light can do funny things to the
heat sensitive paper). Had TT once onto special waterproof label stock
where the labels would sit outside for months at construction sites exposed
to weather from wet Anchorage, AK to hot sunny Phoenix, AZ. DT is a little
cheaper and less hassle with the ribbon (one ribbon typically serves two
rolls of labels). TT is a little more precise, especially for bar codes but
DT is perfectly adequate exceopt for very tiny bars.

I've used Intermec printers (built like tanks) but am now very happy with
our Zebra Z4M. It can print both types of labels.

Does anybody use thermal printers to print labels? What are some good
brands?

Thanks,

Jasper
