OT - smtp virtual server settings

Neil,

As mentioned in a post below, a service based SPAM provider is the way to go. You keep the SPAM from even getting to your network modem/router/firewall. It does a great job and is easy to manage. One of the other benefits is it allows you to tighten down your SMTP traffic to only listen to a range defined by Postini instead of the entire world.

No updates or real management is necessary with Postini and you pay a little amount each month for an excellent service. They even have mail spooling so in the event your Internet connection goes down for an extended period of time, they will spool your mail for you and your customers don't get the dreaded undeliverables.

There are other services like this available, but Google recently purchased Postini and they only buy the best - LOL so that's a good idea of the quality of the product.

Hope this helps.

We also use a Barracuda spam filter as well as a Watchguard Firewall.

One big advantage of an appiance like Barracuda is that your Email filtering takes place OFF of your Email server thus reducing the load on your Exchange Server.

Actually our Watchguard catches nearly all of the SPAM and Virus' before it even gets to the Barracuda, but we like the 2 layers of defense.

We have been having issues with our Exchange server. Some of our mail
gets through but not all. I think I have it narrowed down to the smtp
virtual server settings but wondered what other people had their
settings on. I reduced the number of concurrent connections to ward off
spam attacks but felt that may be the problem so I increased that to 8
session and 3 minute timeout but now it's like I opened the spam gates
of hell!! Is there any way to divert this spam? When is something
going to be done about these people. Can you imagine how much internet
traffic is being wasted with this junk....grrrr. I have AVG exchange
server and it filters most of it but I'd rather not even have it hit my
server at all if possible. Thanks for any assistance. Have a great

What version of Exchange do you have?

We are now on Exchange 2007. We use the built in antispam "IP Block List Providers" and "Sender Reputation" features along with Symantec Premium AntiSpam for Microsoft Exchange. Works fairly well for us. If you want to block it before it hits your email server, you will need either an edge server or a firewall with antispam capabilites. We use a ZyWall firewall, and though we don't use the XyWall Total protection service, we have been happy with all it's other features, specially for the price.

I don't know the answer to your question. We use an outside
company(appriver.com) to sift out our spam before it even gets to our
exchange server.

but as it stands right now, 95.3% of all emails sent to us is blocked as
SPAM.

We have the same issues as Darren and we have Exchange 2007. Mystery why some mail comes through and some not. Never even shows up in Exchange received logs. Often from particular senders even when they've been added to Exchange safe senders. We use the built in reputation too but also use Open Relay Filter from Vamsoft.com which is phenomenal for the $149 one-time price. Lots of great features in ORF including auto-whitelist of addresses sent out to by anyone. We have very little spam getting through to users. But the mail not getting through is a very big worry. The senders don't even get a rejection or undeliverable message...even with then send with receive receipt.

We use Barracuda Spam Firewall. The product is awesome and is rated #1. What is really nice is that it checks black lists that you may be on and notifies you. Barracuda also comes with its own Virus Protector that stops 99% of virus contained in spam and e-mail from entering into Exchange. Does the WatchGuard spam-filter still use a funky query language, or is
it a better and easier-to-implement interface now than it was when I
last used one (4 years ago)?

Based on the nods of approval from this group over a year ago, We went with the outside service Postini (now under the Google Umbrella)

Point your MX pointer in DNS to their servers and your network never sees the spam bandwidth hit - theirs does. Set up the users initial mailbox and they create their own password and are responsible for everything else :o)

All in all, I am pleased with the service - a while back some spam floods got through for a particular address but has been very reliable since.

I'm seeing connections under my virtual smtp server that appear like
these:

QGZWKIQNK ip 127.0.0.1
TSZPOPU ip 127.0.0.1

I've tried looking them up but I can't find any information on them. Is
there a way to block these? There's numerous others just like these
that are just parked there for 1000's of seconds...

It is much better now. It is all run out of a GUI.

You can setup a PC/Server to store the log data and then do reports on who has been surfing where, spam statistics, heaviest Internet Users/PC's, etc.

The Virus and Email filters are subscription based so if you want to keep them up to date you have to pay.

This is true for Barracuda and other appliances like Ironport and the like.
