OT: Small network laser

I have been buying nothing but Brother 1440 or 1470N printers and they are a
lot cheaper than HP and hold up very well. They are cheap enough to through
away when you have a problem. We have about 6 of them (and two at home) and
have never had a problem. Two are in the shop.

Any recommendations for a small networked laser for our shipping department?
I am looking at a HP 1320, a Brother HL-5170DNLT, or a OKI B4350n. I plan
on printing 200 pages per day. The printer sits out in shipping, the usual
machine shop environment.

I have always gone with HP, but the multifunction printer I tried didn't
hold up. I don't have any track record with OKI or Brother to fall back on.

Thanks,

Hi Mitchell,

All of our shop printers are either HP1200 or HP1300.
I have had pretty good luck.
The pdf blueprint quality is just ok over time.
I buy the smaller capacity toner cartridges because our shop is dusty.
The cartridges need to be changed often to keep high quality output.
The print drivers from HP are Vantage and Citrix friendly.
I am able to print barcodes (code39) with no trouble.
I use the USB ports to connect to a work station.
HP has network ready printers as well. (HP1300n for example)
Be carefull of the stock you run through them.
I found with thick paper stock the printers will overheat with large
print jobs.

Good Luck!

Thanks,

Mitchell,

I usually only purchase HP's. My experience has shown their hardware to be
more reliable, that they are easier to find supplies and service centers
for, and that more information can be found online about getting them to
work in obscure configurations with non-typical software and/or networking
setups.

We have several Brother 1440's that were purchased before my time. They
work fine for normal printing but don't have some of the features of older
HP's we purchased used for less. They also don't work in some
configurations that we would like them to. One of the Brother's is in our
shipping department and we are constantly having to replace the toners due
to temperature and humidity destroying the toner by the time it is only
about half used up.

Good Luck!

Mitch:

I have to say I agree with the HP purchases--I have a number of them. I
recently replaced an HP4L -- manufactured in 1993. It has been in our
assembly and test area for at least 4 years--oily, dusty, hot. I moved it
only because they have a higher volume requirement these days and 4 pages a
minute doesn't cut it anymore.

I do have my 1100, 1200, 1300 and 2100 printers overhauled once a year.

Are you saying the HP4L model is ancient?! That's what I use for my

Rick--

No, it's not ancient--but if you keep it 5 more years, the Smithsonian will
call.
