We did the same thing here when the lease was up on the old copier.
Replaced with a Canon Image Runner, so now the copier is also a network
printer, network scanner and also receives and electronically distributes
faxes. Lease rate doubled from the old copier, but I did not have to
replace a creaking HP5000N printer or upgrade RightFax. Like Rich, I worried
about putting so many eggs in this basket, but it has run flawlessly for 6
months (well, streaks began appearing on copies when somebody ran a page
thru the feeder with wet white-out on it- Windex and a cloth fixed that
service call). Scanning is very slick, as you select your name on a menu on
the copier, press "GO", collect your original, and by the time you get back
to your desk, the scan .PDF is waiting for you in Outlook. Scans are black
and white, so I have a flatbed scanner at my workstation for color requests,
which are infrequent. If the timing is right, ie: time to renew copier
lease / replace copier, you might take a look at an Image Runner.

Marty,
Have you thought about taking a step sideways?
Have you thought about replacing the local photocopier with something like a
Canon Image Runner?
We have two.
The slower of the two units is in our Engineering department, and it is a
true networked multifunction fax, photo copy, scanner, printer.
It scans 11x17's as fast as they can get pulled through the document feeder.
My guess is about 1 scan a second for 11x17 much faster for 8.5 x 11
Top scan resolution is 600 DPI
Scans only in black and white.
Our preferred file type is an Adobe PDF file.
Keep in mind we have had these machines for a couple years and things are
certainly even better by now.
Incidentally we have had no real problems with these machines since we got
them.
Good Luck

I've been asked to come up with recommendations for scanners. We'll need
one
that will take up to 11x17 size paper. Any suggested brands and models?
Any
'gotchas' I need to be aware of? Are there any specs that I should pay
particular attention to when choosing?
Thanks,
