(OT) Scanners

We did the same thing here when the lease was up on the old copier.
Replaced with a Canon Image Runner, so now the copier is also a network
printer, network scanner and also receives and electronically distributes
faxes. Lease rate doubled from the old copier, but I did not have to
replace a creaking HP5000N printer or upgrade RightFax. Like Rich, I worried
about putting so many eggs in this basket, but it has run flawlessly for 6
months (well, streaks began appearing on copies when somebody ran a page
thru the feeder with wet white-out on it- Windex and a cloth fixed that
service call). Scanning is very slick, as you select your name on a menu on
the copier, press "GO", collect your original, and by the time you get back
to your desk, the scan .PDF is waiting for you in Outlook. Scans are black
and white, so I have a flatbed scanner at my workstation for color requests,
which are infrequent. If the timing is right, ie: time to renew copier
lease / replace copier, you might take a look at an Image Runner.

Marty,

We have two.
The slower of the two units is in our Engineering department, and it is a
true networked multifunction fax, photo copy, scanner, printer.
It scans 11x17's as fast as they can get pulled through the document feeder.
My guess is about 1 scan a second for 11x17 much faster for 8.5 x 11
Top scan resolution is 600 DPI
Scans only in black and white.
Our preferred file type is an Adobe PDF file.

Keep in mind we have had these machines for a couple years and things are
certainly even better by now.

Incidentally we have had no real problems with these machines since we got
them.

Good Luck

I've been asked to come up with recommendations for scanners. We'll need
one
that will take up to 11x17 size paper. Any suggested brands and models?
Any
'gotchas' I need to be aware of? Are there any specs that I should pay
particular attention to when choosing?

Thanks,

I just added a HP7400c to our engineering dept. It has the option of USB or
SCSI, I connected with USB. Has buttons on the front for scan to file, scan
to mail, fax, etc... (Nice feature) You can scan to file in about 20 seconds
which beats all the other model HP's I have. (HP5100c and HP4200) They both
take twice as long or about a minute to scan. I went thru Dell and paid
about $450 which is a little high when you see scanners for $120 and places
you on the bubble to decide if a few hundred is worth the extra speed and
features.

Was that 11" x 17"? I just went through a search recently and had to tell our Sales Engineers that the least expensive 11x17 I could find was around $2,400. So they withdrew their request real fast.

I missed the 11x17 spec. the HP7400c is not a 11x17.

This may be overkill, but we have leased a Lanier 5635
Copier/Printer/Scanner. At first it seemed a bit of overkill, but in the end
it has worked well for us. It is our copy machine, the engineers use it for
their printer and now they can scan as well. It works for standard 81/2 x
11 as well as 11 x 17. Unfortunately I don't have what the cost is since I
did not negotiate the deal. I am not usually fond of multi functional units
- when one thing goes wrong, you often lose the use of everything else, but
this has worked well for our engineering staff. We have not had any
problems printing from Vantage with it either.
The only catch I've seen so far is that while the scanner is networkable,
the software must be installed on each individual PC. I guess this is one
way to control access, but it is also a hassle.
