[OT] Remote Dial-in Connectivity

Yes. Outlook web access is great. IIS needs to be installed and remote
access. My people love this and it is EXTREMELY easy to set up. There is
no administration at all. We have a T-1 here so they dial up to our ISP.
Open the browser and grab their mail. I know this same concept exists for
term services if you have that installed. The owner of my company is
poolside daily and getting his mail. He especially couldn't be happier.

Exchange 5.5 (under NT-SBS 4.5). What is OWA access? Is this related to
RAS (another option I have considered)? If they are using a browser does
this require web service (IIS) ?
Thanks,

I know this has been discussed several times but I still don't have a good
handle on what works and what does not. Our sales people are screaming for
a way to dial-in from the road and check email on our Exchange server. They
would also like Vantage access but on a dial line I doubt that would work
very well. Email would be sufficient and maybe being able to use a couple
of Access databases too. A way to use Vantage would be frosting. I have
been trying to get VPN through our firewall working but it has been very
difficult and I need to get something else working sooner.

I am thinking of trying PC Anywhere and having them dial a modem on the

as a regular network user? Any chance Vantage will work too? Any other
suggestions?

Todd,

All you need is RRAS and a modem hooked up to a server for email. Routing
and Remote Access Server (RRAS) is available for download (FREE) on the
Microsoft web site and is the default for Windows 2000 server. It works
very well and is very easy to administer.

For remote access for email (however, we use Lotus not Microsoft) as well as
Vantage access we have used Terminal Server/Citrix Metaframe for the last 4
years. Once configured it is VERY low maintenance.

The only responsibility the sales person has is providing their own ISP(
AOL,
Earthlink, DSL, ISDN, etc.).

There are cheaper solutions but since it has proven extremely reliable and
is
virtually maintenance free I feel it has a good ROI.

Todd,

This does not address the issue of VPN, but a simple work around we
developed was to forward all e-mail to an alternate e-mail account (e.g.
aol). This way, all e-mail (LAN and Internet) get's to their outside e-mail
account. This avoids the whole remote access security issue. This was a
inexpensive alternative for us.

Do they each have a modem on their PC or do they call a central modem on the
server? Our digital phone system will not support analog modem lines at the
desks.

What I have used from home and other places, is using VNC over the internet. I have set up Outlook 2000 on my PC at work to look for a certain email subject. When I send it that email, it initiates a VNC session from the PC to where ever I sent the email from. Then I can use Vantage, email, whatever as though i was there.

Getting a Static IP address is a key component for this to work, so I subscribe to "WINIP", a free static IP hosting server which I log into first, before sending the email. That way my work PC always knows what IP address to connect to when I send it the email.

Winip will fit on a floppy disk to install on whatever computer you are using, and you could probably configure the VNC product to fit on a floppy as well.

Subject: [Vantage] [OT] Remote Dial-in Connectivity

I know this has been discussed several times but I still don't have a good
handle on what works and what does not. Our sales people are screaming for
a way to dial-in from the road and check email on our Exchange server. They
would also like Vantage access but on a dial line I doubt that would work
very well. Email would be sufficient and maybe being able to use a couple
of Access databases too. A way to use Vantage would be frosting. I have
been trying to get VPN through our firewall working but it has been very
difficult and I need to get something else working sooner.

I am thinking of trying PC Anywhere and having them dial a modem on the
email server. Is anyone using it this way? Does it authenticate the user
as a regular network user? Any chance Vantage will work too? Any other
suggestions?

Thanks,
