OT: Really remote access

Mitch

I've been on vacation for a week so this is really old response ( part
of my 294 emails to read). I have my exec's using Gotomypc connections for
off site access. You are limited to the speed of you internet connection but
they love it. I've got a couple of senior staff members who now work from
home on Fridays. It's easy to use and you don't have to configure anything.
Load the host on their office computer and and connect from any internet
connection ( looks for the MAC address).

Our President has a vacation home in the upper peninsula of Michigan. This
place is really remote. To give you an idea, five years ago their telephone
was a party line. He wants access to Vantage when he is on vacation. I
found an ISP but his dialup connection is very bad. A vpn connection over
satellite is the only thing I can come up with. Hughes "does not endorse or
support any VPN....".

Given all of the above, I think he is stuck. Satellite would give him
faster email and the ability to browse the net. He can get his management
reports via email. He just can't log-in real time. I think that's the best
I can do.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

How about Terminal Services Client as opposed to VPN. Less overhead,
faster, easier.

Any chance you can use a cell phone out there in paradise?

If so, with an analog cell phone and an adapter you can use the cell phone
for dial up. I setup one of our traveling engineers in Mexico with this
setup about 10 years ago. Worked great as long as he drove up the side of
the nearest mountain so he could be "live" on the cell phone. Ok, so maybe
"Worked Great" is a bit of an over statement these days but he was thrilled
with being able to download new programs from Northern Illinois via modem

Can he get cell phone service where he is at?

Could always try a cell phone Internet card?

But I assume there are no options like T1, Wireless, or high speed
satellite? Can the phone company be involved and made to come and fix their
lines?

That would be my ideas.

I am using verizon's aircard service for these type of situations.
Fortunately my upper mgmt likes to spend its weekend in more populated
areas, so they always have decent service. Keep in mind, when you ony have
a little bit of a signal, you might be helped by using a booster:

My father has a Hughes dish and I connect to Terminal Services with no
problems. I read that because of the lag time Terminal Services wouldn't
run well but I didn't have any problems. I would also check to see if there
is ISDN available via the phone company. It is almost unheard of not to be
able to get an ISDN connection. I had an employee with a dual channel ISDN
connecting via terminal services and it worked great.

Sounds like Terminal Services is the best shot. An ISDN solution and/or TI
is probably too expensive, based on the charges I have seen in the past. We
just got a cable modem last year and DSL this month here at the factory.
The Upper Peninsula makes us look like a thriving metropolis.

The phone line has static and the modem connects at 22,600. The phone
company considers that acceptable. I'll look into cellular, but that
connection can be dicey as well.

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

Terminal services is your best option. If you use a dish, terminal
services would work great and you can set an ecryption level on the
session by configuring your terminal server properly. You could use
the much improved web client and an SSL certificate to provide you
better security. Direct Way is not cheap. You'll pay almost $1000
the first year with equipment. Weather can also be a problem.
