OT: Outlook 98

I have an open license for Microsoft and under that I purchased Office XP
Standard licenses. We still use MS Postoffice for internal mail too... I
hate it!!!, but Management loves it. I took the downgrade option to Office
2000 and purchased the media from CDW... It was about $25 or something like
that. You can call my Acct manager at CDW, Greg Eshoo and he can help
you. 800-505-4239 extension 50220

Hope this helps
Paul L.

Sorry to trouble the group with this way-off topic request, but I'm
running out of options and beginning to get desperate.
The wonderful people at Yahoo (who are hosting my internet email
services) decided to make some configuration changes to their servers
recently which has crippled my ability to send emails. (The SMTP
server now requires user authentication.) Outlook 97 does not support
this and I can't go to Outlook XP just yet because we're still using
the Microsoft Mail feature of NT for our internal email. I am told
that Outlook 98 will support both features, but I can't get my hands
on a copy. My usual software vendors don't have it, Microsoft
Worldwide Commitment doesn't have it, not much currently on Ebay, and
I can't even locate it on Kazaa (told you I'm desperate).I have
Office XP licenses to support the use of Outlook 98 through downgrade
rights, but I can't find the software to install it.
My plea is this, if anybody knows where I can get a copy of Outlook
98 quickly (preferably download) I would love to hear from you.
Thanks, and again, sorry for the OT.

Well, if you're in for long shots....
Way back I bought a book from Microsoft Press called "Running Microsoft Outlook 98" It included a CD and on it is a fully functional copy of Outlook-98. In fact, when we first adopted Outlook I used this as my primary installation disk (thinking the license was covered by our Exchange/NT CALs). You might be able to dig up a copy in the discontinued books section at CompUSA (or similar computer outlet). Sorry, we don't have an FTP site setup and at 177MB its a bit big to email.

Also, was Outlook-98 ever included in a version of office? Even an earlier version of Office-2000? For that matter would Outlook-2000 work for you?

I could courier you a copy of an older version of MS Office. I have Office
97 kicking around here somewhere as well as Office 2000 Small Business
Edition and there was no release of Office 98 only Outlook 98. I happen to
have a copy of Outlook 98 as well. Contact me off-line if you would like me
to proceed.

There is a utility available that allows XP (home and pro) to use Microsoft
mail on NT4. I have both working here. If you are interested I will find
it here or find the URL where we got it. It is a free shareware.

Outlook XP WILL run the old Microsoft Mail protocol. I can explain you how
to set this up (it is a hack that I found on my own).

If anyone is interested in how to do this, let me know.

If you cannot get your hands on Outlook 98, I will tell you how to move on
to XP running the old NT Mail Service.

If you have a Windows 98 CD, the file is on there; after Outlook XP is
installed (no matter which version and this also applies for Outlook 2000),
browse to a file on the CD in the E:\tools\oldwin95\message\us directory.
There is a file in here called wms.exe ... this is file that will solve your
problems.

Run this program and it will install Microsoft Mail on your computer ...
Yes, your Outlook Icon will go away, but don't worry its easy to get this
back.

To do so, run another program called chnginbx.exe, located in:
E:\VALUPACK\PATCH of your Office 97 CD (I believe this was the Pro version,
not sure where its at in the Small Business Version).

If you can't find the files, or don't have these CD's, I can zip up the two
programs and email them too you off the newsgroup.

Anyone else who would like the files, email me at jholmes@...
