OT - Outlook 2002 blocking attachments

If anyone else would like the file I sent to Gary, email me off-list and I
can forward it to you as well.

Jim,

They're already low. Thanks. Jessee Holmes sent me a VB attachment that
resets the registry to allow Outlook to let specific attachments in. Works
good. But I think I'll make people zip their attachments. This whole thing
is a very large sack of steer manure. Another good use for the $82 billion
(besides the obvious ones) - track down and get rid of internet terrorists,
or at least come up with a way for people to actually use the internet
again.

Gary,
In Outlook go to Tools > Options and the Security tab. Try lowering the
security level and it might allow some attachments that were blocked. Others
are correct about not allowing .bat .exe and other extensions that are
deemed a virus threat. Don't forget to reset the security setting after
opening the attachment.

Hi all. Just started installing Office XP. My machine first. Outlook 2002
is blocking attachments, and I can't find the switch to turn it off. Anybody
know about this?

Thanks in advance.

Gary,

Microsoft added this "feature" in either Outlook 2000 SP1 or SP2. There
really is no way to turn it off within Outlook given Microsoft's tough
stance on virus security, yes my tongue is securely planted in my cheek.

I have installed the utility this link points to
http://www.mapistore.com/Outlook/Attachments/Download_00082_1.html. It
basically adds a tab to the tools options menu entitled "Attachment
Security & Options" and you are able to select which extension you would
like to receive.

In Christ

If you're talking about executable attachments, just cut the last letter off
the attachment extension and have the recipient rename it.

I just finished installing Outlook 2003 on my three customer service
computers. The reason for the upgrade is the new Unlimited size to .PST
files. In the past year two of the three had crashed their email by hitting
the magic limitation of 2 GB. I created the new Unicode PST file and then
imported the old version PST files. I have two of them running 3+ GB pst
files and Outlook opens faster than the old one with a small PST file. Added
bonus is the junk mail filter actually works at catching SPAM.

Cliff- We don't have Exchange - I think that's what you're talking about
when you say to cut off the last letter. But I sure like the Outlook 2003
PST capacity. Thanks. -Gary

Outlook 2002 blocks the access to a list of potentially unsafe
attachments. There is a way to work around this:
Start REGEDIT and navigate to the following subkey:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\OFFICE\10.0\OUTLOOK\SECURITY and create
a new string value named Level1Remove. Now modify the newly created subkey
and type in the first attachment you want to unlock f.e. .exe (don't forget
the dot in front of the extension!), all other attachments you want to
access need to be separated by a semicolon (;) f.e. .exe;.doc;.xls
You can also download a more user friendly utility which does the same thing
at www.slipstick.com
