OT OS selection [SMC WIRE FABRICATORS]

If they do this what is to stop them from saying you can only run MS SQL on
an MS Server. Or only exchange on an MS Server. Or only MS office at the
desktop- and the most current version. Technically nothing, we are only
buying licenses, and as such have only the few rights the licensor grants.

Microsoft can say they are not a monopoly, but they behave like they are
one.

There was a story posted a couple of weeks back on Slashdot.org regarding
this. If I remember correctly, it is something that Microsoft was
considering amending to the license with the release of service pack 1 for
XP. As far as I know this hasn't been implemented yet. I seriously doubt
that this would ever be implemented due to the fact that almost all network
operating systems (Unix, Linux, Netware, etc.) contain at least some GPL
programs. Nothing very big, but they are there. It would also be extremely
difficult to monitor and prove.

I just heard an interesting XP story last night, that I am considering a
rumor till it can be researched further. Sounds awfully scary, though.

A friend tells me that the Win XP license specifically forbids using it in
conjunction with any GPL software ("freeware", more or less) including
installing windows apps and connecting to servers. This would mean nice
free utilities like VNC or alternate file servers like Samba are verboten!

Bill can be as draconian as he likes (or can get away with) on how I use
his own products, but if he's gonna start dictating which 3rd party
packages can be run on his monopolized OS, that's nuts!

This rumor is from someone who's much more of an Anti-MS zealot than me,
so... grain of salt till I see for myself.

For those that are sick of my long winded email...
I am looking to advise an employee about a home laptop purchase.
This one was just to tough for me to call. I am wondering if anyone else
can advise.
XP Home Vs. ME
I don't like either, anyone have any thoughts.

Hi Aaron
1) I would go for ME, because of a lot of driver issues with XP for Home Users, especially if they're not power-users.
2) "Practice Save Computing" in your Tagline should probably be "Practise Safe Computing", unless it's a joke I'm not getting :)

Or, goto www.ebay.com <http://www.ebay.com> ... search by seller ...
"dell_financial_services"

Laptops galore at prices that make sense for "Home" use. These are boxes
coming off of leases and many still have warranty time left. Dell Financial
Services is the leasing arm of Dell.

Looks like today's batch is mostly Win-98. My preference is Win-2000-PRO.
ME and XP-Home are an absolute pain in the butt when you try and network
them or dial into a "Domain". XP-Pro doesn't seem to bad but I find the new
interface and network setup "Confusing" ( Yes, that means I'm getting to
OLD for this game. )

I have both XP Home and ME at home. I hate the XP interface. but you can
change that to traditional. ME is stable and I like the RESTORE feature.
Hubby's XP bogs when I do a file search. (He has 1/2 a gig of memory DDR and
a 2 gig processor with 333mhz bus) It troubles me that it does that. I
have the same hardware do the same search on ME and it flies. Go figure.
With XP you are commited to a two year upgrade cycle, or as Microsoft says.
"UPGRADE OR DIE". I guess you have to go with XP and hope that the LINIX
"Zorro" comes out soon to protect us peasents.

Good point about the XP upgrade cycle. I believe when you get XP Home, you are required (by Microsoft) to register the OS after a certain number of uses, or the OS shuts down. That's ignorant. If you want to keep Microsoft out of your mailbox, go with ME.

Thank you all. This has been educational. One last part to the question.
Am I to understand that XP home does not have the "Remote Desktop
Connection" client? Not having seen "Home" but only "Professional" I was
not aware of this. This was the only advantage in XP's corner. Without it,
the choice is much easier.

Also Thank you Len, the joke was on me. Why can't MS make a spellchecker
that knows what I was thinking, not typing? :)
Thank you again,
Aaron

Hi Aaron,
It is always amazing to me how what I'm doing that day comes up here on the
Onelist!
XP Pro is the only OS that you can remote, but I have just finished d/l the
"Client" that you can install on 9x and up to remote any XP Pro machine. I
d/l it from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/rdclientdl.asp

Good Luck.
