OT: Notebook purchase

Out of curiosity, I priced a 15" 'L' notebook from that site loaded for
engineering use (with P4 3GHz) at $3600. The engineering wonder at Dell -
the M60 - similarly equipped (highest I could get was P4 2.4GHz CPU) was
$5200. I didn't take pains to split hairs, but this looks like a lot for
the money. I'll be looking into this for a couple of people here.

I just got a few Dell D505. Seem to be ok but no real miles on them yet.

However, I had a MPC (Micron) Rep come to my office. We are not a large
company but he wanted to ensure me of the high level of service I could
expect. A member of his team called the next day to make sure I had
received all the info I had requested. Also, said all tech support 24-7 is
based in Idaho. Also asked if I had a standard image I wanted on my
machines. Dell said I needed a significantly higher number of machines a
month before they had any interest.

Priced competitively. Plus for the execs, an integrated fingerprint reader
for passwords. Locks the laptop down at the BIOS level. Can be tied into
all the passwords.

Consumer reports recommended extended warranty for two purchases: treadmills and laptops.

This was due to the physical abuse and potential for breakage.

Jim,

Don't know about how it would work on the road, but we just got a Panasonic
Toughbook with the FARO arm purchased. I'm setting it up now. It looks
like aircraft aluminum, nice fingerpad, touchscreen, clear display, very
fast, nice keybd, good physical layout. Much better than the $3800 Inspiron
that's sitting right next to it. I know they're a bundle, but you said
high-end....

Dell is about the only brand I would consider. However, I had not heard of
any recent service problems.

I would suggest you go with a Centrino or "M" (mobile) series
processor. The regular Pentiums have a huge power appetite (at least for a
battery powered device) and battery life is less than an hour on most of
them. The "M" processors have more modest looking clock speeds (~ 1500MHz)
but performance is reasonable, and they'll run for 2 or 3 hours on a charge.

You mention DVD capability... if he really just wants a movie
player, maybe you convince him to keep it simple and just get one ;)

Priced competitively. Plus for the execs, an integrated fingerprint reader
for passwords. Locks the laptop down at the BIOS level. Can be tied into
all the passwords.

I LOVE my Sony TR1A for just that reason. Excellent screen, DVD, Centrino
(fast enough for anything I've needed) and is small, light and fits into a
briefcase.

Just a thought...

Subject: [Vantage] OT: Notebook purchase

The Vice President of my company has decided he wants a notebook to go
traveling with

I am looking for recommendations

Tow things

It has to be a high end laptop with DVD Capability

I like Dell's notebooks a lot but with the recent service problems I have
had, I am rethinking Dell for the purchase of anything until they straighten
out their service issues

(Another story)

I like the Inspiration 9100 but wondered what else out there might be
comparable?

We have some Micron PC's in here but wondered about their notebook line?

Anyone got a preference for a HIGH END notebook?
