[OT] Modem Connections

This is a WILD guess. In the connection settings for the modem (that is calling), I enter "+MS=34" (with no quotes) to force my modem to connect at 28.8Kbps. If phone lines are bad, modems that try to connect at 56K often get confused and drop the call, which is probably what's happening when you dial the AT&T number.

Your modem book may give the exact connect strings for your modem.

Subject: [Vantage] [OT] Modem Connections

Just in case someone else has run into this... I am trying to allow a user
to dial-in to a PC running pcAnywhere Host to read email and acces Vantage.
When we test it using local (just dialing the 7-digit local #) it works
fine. Speed is even reasonable for a dial-in conneciton. Vantage actually
works faster than Outlook (less screen painting). But when we force it to
dial via AT&T 800 # to use credit card it connects for about a minute then
drops. Speed is half of when using local method. All I can attribute this
to is crappy lines within AT&T.

Question: Anyone have any ideas for making the modem more tollerant? Slow
speed would not matter if it would just not disconnect. I have tried all
the buffer/fifo settings and error/compress combinations. Are there any
pcAnywhere settings to cause it to not drop connection so quickly?

Xxircom-56 internal modem on laptop - Motorola ModemSurfer External on host
PC (also tried Best 56K same symptoms).

User (Dir. of Sales) leaves in about an hour for two week sales trip and I
am not sure what to try next.

Thanks,
