OT: Microsoft Mail (Exchange) in Windows XP

Well the only thing that I was concerned about keeping it on list with is
that I know its DEFINITELY not recommended by Epicor ... HOWEVER, it is
possible and I'm going to start digging into it as to how to do it.

Using INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE in a ODBC SQL query to Progress Vantage
Database is a very dangerous thing to do. So if anyone else dares try
anything like this, I HIGHLY recommend using a TEST VERSION OF your database
on a machine off your Vantage Server and better yet, off the entire network.

Just thought it might be wise in keeping it off list. But I can definitely
let you know some of my results (and problems).

If so, please contact me off list, I'd like to ask a couple simple

In addition to the UserFields, I write to VB Form fields and add Memos to
the Memo table with ODBC on a daily basis.

We've done this for more than a year (both in 4.0 and 5.1) - no problems. I
spent a considerable amount of time researching everything I've written to
to make sure there were no dependencies in other areas of Vantage. I also
spent plenty of time with our test database before I implemented anything
live.

Sounds great, what specific programs did you use to write to Vantage via
ODBC? Visual Basic or others? Was wondering if Access or Excel or even
FrontPage is capable of doing something like this.

Thanks,

Access doesn't work very well with the Progress database. It works nice to
give quick queries and a nice view of the tables. I would never trust
Access to update the database.

We have a company Intranet and have several applications written in ASP
(Active Server Pages). These are dynamic web pages with server side
scripting (Visual Basic). I've written several applications that work with
allow users a quick and easy way to add memos to orders, etc... The server
must have Vantage installed (this installs the Progress ODBC drivers). Then
I create a system ODBC connection on the Windows web server (W2K). I do not
(and wouldn't recommend) serving web pages from the Vantage server. After
that I use DAO (Data Access Object) in Visual Basic to communicate with the
database - all calls are standard SQL (select from, insert into, etc...).

Sounds great, what specific programs did you use to write to Vantage via
ODBC? Visual Basic or others? Was wondering if Access or Excel or even
FrontPage is capable of doing something like this.

Thanks,

In addition to the UserFields, I write to VB Form fields and add Memos to
the Memo table with ODBC on a daily basis.

We've done this for more than a year (both in 4.0 and 5.1) - no problems. I
spent a considerable amount of time researching everything I've written to
to make sure there were no dependencies in other areas of Vantage. I also
spent plenty of time with our test database before I implemented anything
live.

I use Access to modify simple stuff like order header and order line
comments, copy the same comments into Shipping and Invoicing comments (they
are in the same table), firm order releases, put all orders uploaded with
EDI on hold for review (yes, I am using the EDI module to upload orders),
and basically that is all. I get from our partner, a comma delimited file
that Access converts into an 850 document that Vantage EDI reads.

I will never try to change information in the live database without testing
it thoroughly in a test database (cradle to grave for the record changed). I
will never ADD information in Vantage using Access. It is almost a guarantee
to corrupt your database. I used Ground Control to Add 2500 customers and
near 5000 ship to's for the same project over a weekend. This program
reproduces key strokes enabling the semi-automation of key entry in Vantage.
Good luck and if you decide to use Access and make sure you do it in a test
database first and look at the data from all the angles. Ground Control is a
program by Acrasoft.com

Somebody out there I'm sure is doing this. However, you are risking
severe corruption of your database. I think a lot of us Vantageites
would like to, but if you do this, any damage you cause will be a
billable fix by Epicor, if fixable at all. Verrrrry risky stuff.

Yes Access and Excel are capable of changing Progress tables via ODBC. In
fact, it's so easy that it's a terrible security risk for your database.
Anyone with ODBC can simply link to a Progress table and start editing
fields left and right - using Excel or Access. You probably want to be more
concerned about user's getting to such knowledge than whether or not you
could use such a tool for any good use.

Sounds great, what specific programs did you use to write to Vantage via
ODBC? Visual Basic or others? Was wondering if Access or Excel or even
FrontPage is capable of doing something like this.

Thanks,

In addition to the UserFields, I write to VB Form fields and add Memos to

We've done this for more than a year (both in 4.0 and 5.1) - no problems.
I
spent a considerable amount of time researching everything I've written to

spent plenty of time with our test database before I implemented anything

Well the only thing that I was concerned about keeping it on list with is
that I know its DEFINITELY not recommended by Epicor ... HOWEVER, it is
possible and I'm going to start digging into it as to how to do it.

Using INSERT, UPDATE, or DELETE in a ODBC SQL query to Progress Vantage
Database is a very dangerous thing to do. So if anyone else dares try
anything like this, I HIGHLY recommend using a TEST VERSION OF your
database
on a machine off your Vantage Server and better yet, off the entire

Just thought it might be wise in keeping it off list. But I can definitely

Great! Thanks all for the input on this issue. So far Visual Basic is
seeming the way to go. I'm excited to begin using ODBC to fully corrupt our
database ... (that was a joke).

Anyways, thanks again for the input, at least I have some direction to head
now.

After
that I use DAO (Data Access Object) in Visual Basic to communicate with the
database - all calls are standard SQL (select from, insert into, etc...).

about Vantage running on a 64-bit system (i.e. Itanium, AMD, IBM, etc.).

1) Does Vantage utilize 64-bit processing?
2) Will Vantage 7.0 (.NET) utilize 64-bit Processing?
3) Which 64-bit Processors would you recommend? 32-bit?
4) Can Vantage run on Apple or IBM machines (UNIX Driven)? Will it anytime
soon?
5) Are there bottlenecks to consider in hardware when using a 64-bit
processor?

These are all the questions I can think of regarding this issue for right
now, but our company is going to be in the market for a new server here in
about a year. However, they are very interested in looking into 64-bit
processing, so I'm trying to round up all the information I can regarding
this issue and give them my recommendation on the matter.

I'm currently using C++ & ODBC (DAO) in several utility apps
for both reading and writing to the database...
be EXTEMELY careful if writing -- just because the
referential integrity is there, the LOGICAL integrity
(depending on the vantage programming) can still be corrupted...

The ODBC connections are very dangerous -- you could hop into
a common pc app and in 10 steps, give yourself system
manager capabilities in vantage.
I prefer to write the ODBC programs as client/server with the
ODBC portion on the server, then the user connects via a
client app.

Here is the deal, I'm sick and tired of dealing with Microsoft and their
"incompatibility" problems with newer Operating Systems with a program that
is still commonly used in their NT 4.0 Server system which has not been
"shelved" quite yet.

I am tired of trying to make Windows Messaging work on an XP box by itself
without using Outlook (which costs a license).

1) Does ANYONE have any idea what other FREEWARE program is out there on the
net that will INSTALL AND USE the old "Microsoft Mail" protocol AND YET WORK
ON WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL?

2) What are alternatives to the Microsoft Mail system for internal company
messaging (NOT external)? (Meaning I can't see giving an email address like
"datacollection@...", I would rather have a separate address
book that only our internal servers use with an email address of "Data
Collection")

Any information on this would be much appreciated.

We use something called AVIRT Gateway Suite for internal email
Is not free but pretty inexpensive
When I got here (A little over a year ago) the software was used for
both internal email and a gateway to get our users on the internet
Since then I have upgraded our internet service and bought a firewall
so I do not need the gateway portion of the software
But it works great for our internal email

I think you can even download a 30 day eval

Check it out

http://www.avirt.com

I think you are going to see alot of anti microsoft sentiments out
there building there is a website out there now call
F&*$microsoft.com (censored)

It has alot of useful info on it
Despite the not so good domain name
Do you need a client or a server?

We use Linux (sendmail) for our mail server. No complaints.

Bottom line ... I have become VERY hesitant to upgrade ANY MS products in

across my entire network.

Best bet if you want no hassles ? Use the same version of MS products
across the board and understand that any upgrade may involve new pcs and
servers to boot.

Frustrating isn't it?

Really just a client that will run the Microsoft Mail protocol. But even
using something other than the Microsoft Mail protocol would be good as
well.

Linux I hear is a good choice, now I'll see if my company wants to consider
bringing a "NON-Microsoft" machine in here ... Grrrrr.

Thanks

And as for AVIRT I will try that out thank you very much.

Do you just use the standard mbox format that sendmail dumps all messages to
or do you have a mail server in addition to Sendmail (which is just a
message transfer agent)? Also, how do you authenticate users from a Windows
domain to access the mailboxes on the Sendmail server? Are you just using
IMAP? Do you have to keep a separate password file for your Linux box,
then?

We have a Linux server running Sendmail that acts as our email gateway - I'm
using RBL's to filter spam and open relays (1000 messages a week filtered
for 40 email accounts). After sendmail is done with it, though, I pass it
on to our Exchange 5.5 server. This has a nice user interface and
scheduling capabilities.

I'm curious about the system you use. Any information you could provide
would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to do away with the Exchange Server
if I can.
