OT-MCSE Cert

Agreed. When I was in school someone told me "Having a degree doesn't
necessarily open any doors for you - it just doesn't close any."

My $0.02 from a hiring point of view; I strictly look at MCSE/A+ and others
(with the exception of CCNA, maybe), as marketing tools. If an applicant
has any of those certs, it's a bonus. If the applicant can back the certs
up with real life experience (and especially 20 years of it) it's a hire.

Regarding having a B.S. or a Master's, the same holds true; for me it is
experience that talks. Most of the stuff we do in our jobs is not taught in
a classroom (be it at Epicor, or your local educational facility). This
newsgroup, with its broad discussions, can teach you more in the span of one
semester than any college could. As the matter of fact, being an active
subscriber should makes us all eligible for college credit.

I know however, that having a B.S. or any other degree, no matter how
unrelated, opens doors for you.

Thanks everyone. I have worked in this industry for 20 years. I know real
world not by the book. This has created apprehension in my taking these
tests. My company only wanted me to study. No formal classroom training on
this. Thanks for the suggestions/advice.

Boy this is a big "hot topic" for me
I went through all the Microsoft Certification classes
Spent the 10k and never got my certification
The training was good and I passed my first test
But personally I think its a waste of time
I'd have been better off putting that 10K towards my bachelor's degree
See I was unemployed for 8 months
I have 15+ years experience in the IT Field
I got my Micro$oft MCP (Certified professional - but did not get the
MCSE)
And everyone I tried to get a job with said the same thing
You do not have a bachelor's degree.
Luckily I found a place that did not require me to have a bachelors
but on the flip side, I am not making what I could be if I had the BS

Save your $$
Try for A Plus Certification and some security certifications

PLUS the Microsoft tests trick you and don't present real world
scenarios'
Good theory stuff in their classes but in the real world their ideas
stink.
In fact the place I took my classes was also a consulting firm and
the instructors would say:

Okay if you are taking tests for your MCSE - The correct answer would
be
Now if you want the real world answer it is
And they would proceed to tell us

Its overrated
Good old hands on to me is the best teacher

Good luck with your decision

How difficult is this testing really? I was told it is completely
by the book. I have studied for this. I manage this entire
company's IT infrastucture and everything under that. I am not sure
if I am afraid of failure or what. I keep putting this off. Any
directions, input or encouragement would be great. Thanks so much.
I took and passed the cert for the NT 4 set of operating systems. While
they were by the book, real world experience only helped to a degree with
that version of the tests. There were very specific questions about the
Microsoft operating systems, which you would expect. I found the
combination of the Sybex books and the MCSE PREP books made the tests easy.
The Enterprise test was probably the toughest but really not bad. If you
know the books youÂ’ll do fine.

I thought they were difficult, but the hardest is the first test, because
you don't know what to expect. After that, study hard and you'll have no
trouble.
