[OT] Large Document scanners

I just got through a project looking for large format printer / scanner /
copier. We ended up only purchasing a printer, they are all modular
designs. The printer, copier, scanner combo was around $19,000 for a 2-roll
printing system... Xerox engineering systems. Other systems we looked at
(which were more expensive) were oce and Kip. Also, depending on what you
need, we also came across refurbished units for a little less...

Can anyone give a recommendation regarding the purchase of a Large Document Scanner? We have paper drawings from Customers up to 4 feet (D size??) that we would like to begin scanning so we can throw away the paper and email rather than fed-ex.

Can anyone point me to a cost-effective, reliable scanner for this purpose?

We've been using a Calcomp ScanPlus III 400T and haven't had any problems with it. Maximum scan width is 36".

John,

What is the price range for these scanners and how large are the files once
scanned?

Thanks,

We use an OCE 9400,it will scan D size. Just make sure you have an extra
arm and leg setting around to pay the invoice.

The Calcomp cost around $11,000 and included the scanning software. We've scanned automotive prints 36" wide X 10 ft long. You're limited by the amount of ram in your system. A C-size print scanned at 400dpi in .tif format results in a 7.5MB file. However, we use AutoCAD and GTX RasterCAD to clean up the image and the size shrinks down to 92KB when saved.

I am relaying this for a colleague who is having Yahoo problems. - Greg

Troy,

It's been over a year since I looked at scanners, but if I remember
correctly, a roll-feed scanner in the D size range was around $30k.

The company I work for needed much better accuracy (+/- 0.002 inch, 100-1200
dpi optically), large capacity (72" x 196"), and a flatbed design to convert
aerospace undimensioned drawings and templates (sheet metal and plastic up
to 3/4 inch thick)-- this made the scanner and room environment very
expensive.

Having a large scanner is great! We use the scanned images for internal
documentation, supplier documentation, and can convert the image to CAD very
quickly.

As far as disk space, it will depend on several variables, such as: scan
resolution (dpi), black/white/grayscale/color, image file format. Patriot
must keep the scan image at the original's size, but we can resample the
file to a smaller size (i.e. 8.5" x 11") for the purposes of email for
supplier quoting (RFQ) or supplier documentation. For a size example: A 65"
x 125" drawing scanned in at 500dpi and black/white made a 3,304kb TIFF file
with G4 compression.

For more details, visit: http://www.patriot-machine.com/vlfscanning.htm

There are several companies that offer scanning as a service.

Best regards,

Noble
