OT-KVM Shock [SMC WIRE FABRICATORS]

A metal server cabinet works well for static discharge. The dang thing
shocks me every time I open the door to get to my servers whether I want it
to or not.

Not just the KVM but lots of other routes for static discharge through the
PC or server, like the keyboard or mouse (blown both before). Here in
Minnestoa when it is -10 to -15 or lower outside as the air warms indoors it
has super low relative humidity so static is a real issue. By long habit
(learned the hard way) I am always touching metal whenever I can (door
frames, cubicle edges, etc...) and always touch my PC case before I touch
the keyboard. At my server console for the 4 servers (on KVM switch) I have
a small plate of sheet steel with an alligator clip and wire to the center
screw on an outlet face plate under the desk. I touch this before I touch
anything else.

I just had to share this with someone.

Yesterday I want to work at one of my servers. I go to press the button on
my KVM switch to switch over tot he server I want to work on. I feel a
static electric shock and my Vantage server starts to squeal. The screen
saver is frozen the server is dead. I blew my system board by touching my
KVM switch!

Has anything like this happend to anyone else? I think I am going to invest
in a better KVM Switch, one that is grounded!

I was searching through past barcode related messages and could not find my
issue discussed.
I have two types of scanners, Welch Allyn Scanteam5400 and a Metrologic
MS951.
What I am looking to do is find a way to send (alt+) via a barcode. I can
do (ctrl+) with a $ but I was wondering if anyone has this information right
of the top of their head. I will call the scanner support line if I can't
find it, but I thought I would ask this never ending spring of knowledge
first.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Aaron,

The text for a 3 of 9 barcode for Alt-+ should be:

*%D+%E*

Good Luck,

John.

Although I have never experienced this first hand, I use to work in a
computer repair store and
YES Static electricity can fry a motherboard

Thats why I invested in a humidifier for my office
Not 100% but it sure helps
