[OT] ISO Certification

Sarah,

Sorry it took so long to get back to you on this topic. I do not know where
you are located but here in Northern Illinois we went through McHenry County
College. The state of Illinois offers grants to businesses for this effort.

The college has a consulting firm they work with (Total Quality Systems).
They provide excellent training, procedure templates, software, and on site
visits. We started the training in October 2004 and finished April 2005.

We have already contacted registrars and expect to be certified by December
2005.

I don't know if other states offer such programs but is well worth the look
see.

Good Luck!

Wayne

Sorry of the off-topic, but... I have recently been given the enormous task
of getting my company ISO certified. Currently, we have some procedures,
etc, but they were basically written as needed, and probably do not nearly
address the ISO requirements.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good starter training class for
ISO, either on-line training or classroom training. I've done some searches
on the internet and there are just so many of them at all different price
levels, that I thought I would just check and see if anyone else has
undergone this type of project and taken training that they would recommend.
I am quite overwhelmed and not really sure where to begin with this...

Thanks for any feedback or advice!

-Sarah

If you don't mind a little bit of automotive

www.iso-specialists.com has a documentation template package that's very
comprehensive. It has more breadth & depth than any small company would
ever want or be able to fully implement, but it may be a good starting
point for identifying where you need to fill in the gaps, and get better
organized. Costs about $200, and you can download immediately. You can
also download the ISO standards from the ANSI store. www.iso.org has
some helpful overview information.

remember the caveats: (1) Keep it simple (2) Say what you do, Do what
you say you do, & prove it.

Good luck!

Couldn't agree more. ISO is a lot more about following the processes and written instructions than writing up really detailed work instructions. Some ambiguity is allowed and can be very useful for handling fuzzy situations in advance. Trying to nail down everything will cripple your company and that is not the intent of ISO. Most of our documentation has at the least an option for management review and determination of action. As long as the review and actions are documented it passes audits.

Actually ISO is not that bad. We've been QS certified (another of my
hats) for about 5 years. I'm moving us to TS16949 which is the mother
of all standards. We used to be on a product called Powerway. It's
your document control, audit, quality system package all in one. We've
moving every thing into word. I'm using Vantage's part master and its
document control module as our Master Document list, in addition I've
built an intranet website to serve up all of our documents. As Todd
said keep it simple and focus on what works. If you have any input
into who your audit service is I would HIGHLY recomend Smithers here in
OHIO. Their auditors will help you with questions interpretations and
if you get a good one everybody gets a mulligan during the audit.
