[OT] Internet Usage Monitoring

Your welcome. I'm glad I could contribute instead of lurking like
I've done for the last few years.

Sonicwall also offers a more robust reporting module called
ViewPoint. It isn't free and I don't know the price. I've switched
from SonicWall to Checkpoint, so I don't keep up.

If you are using tracert for the netbios resolve, you should
try "nbtstat -A (ip address)". It's quicker.

Best regards,

Noble Hudson
I know there have been a couple spins on this previously but I have an additional requirement being imposed. Zero cost.

With the war and the increased desire to be informed we are seeing far too much Internet/Web usage. Both time and bandwidth. In particular people viewing streaming content from various news sites and streaming radio. The President of the company has walked in on one person too many not doing their work and watching news broadcasts. It is also affecting reception of email and uploading content to our web hosting service. He wants to know who the top abusers are but he won't spend any money to find out. So whatever I come up with has to be free (or shareware cheap enough to come out of my limited pocket).

Anyone know of cheap a way to track Internet usage? Not specific sites necessarily but amount of time and traffic. Most users are Win-98, the DNS host is Win2K and everything funnels from a SonicWall-Pro box acting as the gateway. So individual desktops actually bypass the server and do NAT via the firewall. I'm not sure there is a point in the network, other than at the desktop or in the firewall, where I could trap usage statistics. I think I'm on a wild goose chase.

Thanks,
-Todd Caughey

I would like to know the same. Our bandwidth has had the life sucked out of

Todd,

There are several products on the market that will track AND limit usage.
They are NOT free.

Silly question I suppose but ... If your company is losing productivity from
your employees due to this problem why wouldn't your owner be willing to
spend some money to stop it???????????????????????????????

Todd,

Try www.surfcontrol.com <http://www.surfcontrol.com>

It's a pretty decent product that allows you to track AND block activity.

You can also get a free 30 day trial. Perhaps if your owner sees it action
the price tag will make some sense.

It's funny how some people on see the cost when you write a check.

Try to explain the carrying cost of inventory. Better yet, ink jets are
cheaper because the cartridges are only $30 ;~)

and the higher ups see what it can do, they may spend the money. Otherwise
you can at least get 30 days worth of reporting and blocking.

Todd,

There are several products on the market that will track AND limit usage.
They are NOT free.

Silly question I suppose but ... If your company is losing productivity from
your employees due to this problem why wouldn't your owner be willing to
spend some money to stop it???????????????????????????????

Anyone know of cheap a way to track Internet usage? Not specific sites

host is Win2K and everything funnels from a SonicWall-Pro box acting as the
gateway. So individual desktops actually bypass the server and do NAT via
the firewall. I'm not sure there is a point in the network, other than at

think I'm on a wild goose chase.

Michael and Todd, Thanks. Funny but there is no price anywhere at SurfControl so I am waiting for a 50 user quote from CDW. Perhaps the 30-day trial is worth looking at. Hopefully the "need for news" will pass long before it expires.

Todd,

Try www.surfcontrol.com < http://www.surfcontrol.com>

It's a pretty decent product that allows you to track AND block activity.

You can also get a free 30 day trial. Perhaps if your owner sees it action
the price tag will make some sense.

I have a bird feeder outside my office window. All day long I hear "cheap,
cheap, cheap", and it's not coming from the birds.

He is walking a fine line between productivity and trusting people and he
thinks just the knowledge that monitoring could be done will be enough to
persuade people to throttle their web surfing. If there really was
something available for a couple hundred dollars I think he might go for it
but all the products I've see are much higher.

The Sonicwall Pro will list the top 25 bandwidth users by IP under
the LOG function, Reports Tab, and view report "Bandwidth Usage by
IP". If you use DHCP, it will make finding the abusers harder.
Another built-in report that helps is "Bandwidth Usage by Service".

www.elronsw.com has a product called Web Inspector. You can download a
free demo that runs for 30 days. It runs on NT or Win2k. I ran it for a
month last year on an old P-Pro 200 with NT workstation, and it had plenty
of crunch to monitor the traffic from 60 PCs.

It's pretty cool how it works... You probably have your firewall plugged
into a switch port? Well, the traffic on that cable should ONLY be
Internet traffic. You plug a hub (not a switch) in where the firewall
was. Then connect the firewall and Web Inspector box to the hub.

Web Inspector puts the NIC into promiscuous mode so it can intercept and
read all the packets to & from the firewall. If it sees an HTTP request to
a web server in its block list, it can fire out an IP packet with the
headers spoofed to look like it can from the remote server. The surfer
will get a "404 error" or you can custom write HTML to be displayed.

All traffic can be logged, with visits to "bad" sites specially flagged,
and you can see who's wasting the most time or is accessing info that can
get the company in trouble :) Run it for a week or two to collect stats,
and show the Pres. He'll probably be shocked enough to cough up the $1000
or so for it.

There were a couple bugs in it a year & a half ago, but they're probably
been fixed. Ask me about them before you write a check for it.

Plus, all Sonic Wall products allow content filtering including URL
inclusion/exclusion lists. You can simply list a few allowable URL's and
eliminate all the rest. Here's the link to the manual

Good Luck!

Todd,

I am going to bang this drum again many, companies rush to use monitoring software without knowledge of their own legal responsibilities.

Before you monitor your internet usage and email check your state laws.
Some states prohibit the monitoring of email and internet usage without the company providing both a written and signed notice of that monitoring, additionally daily warnings that you are monitoring.
We have found that verbal warnings (threats) work pretty well.

Rich,

I agree on the legalities. We wrote up a company policy that was very
simple and to the point. Internet usage, email or browsing, is for company
purposes only. Personal use can result in termination.

Did that work? Nope.

Did monitoring and blocking ... yup.

Or you have Pat Winter's solution - once a month at random forward a copy of
all email msg's to the president ...

Rich,

I agree on the legalities. We wrote up a company policy that was very
simple and to the point. Internet usage, email or browsing, is for
company
purposes only. Personal use can result in termination.

Did that work? Nope.

Did monitoring and blocking ... yup.

Or you have Pat Winter's solution - once a month at random forward a
copy of
all email msg's to the president ...

Todd,

I am going to bang this drum again many, companies rush to use
monitoring
software without knowledge of their own legal responsibilities.

Before you monitor your internet usage and email check your state laws.
Some states prohibit the monitoring of email and internet usage without
the
company providing both a written and signed notice of that monitoring,
additionally daily warnings that you are monitoring.
We have found that verbal warnings (threats) work pretty well.

I know there have been a couple spins on this previously but I have an
additional requirement being imposed. Zero cost.

With the war and the increased desire to be informed we are seeing far
too
much Internet/Web usage. Both time and bandwidth. In particular people
viewing streaming content from various news sites and streaming radio.
The
President of the company has walked in on one person too many not doing
their work and watching news broadcasts. It is also affecting reception
of
email and uploading content to our web hosting service. He wants to
know
who the top abusers are but he won't spend any money to find out. So
whatever I come up with has to be free (or shareware cheap enough to
come
out of my limited pocket).

Anyone know of cheap a way to track Internet usage? Not specific
sites
necessarily but amount of time and traffic. Most users are Win-98, the
DNS
host is Win2K and everything funnels from a SonicWall-Pro box acting as
the
gateway. So individual desktops actually bypass the server and do NAT
via
the firewall. I'm not sure there is a point in the network, other than
at
the desktop or in the firewall, where I could trap usage statistics. I
think I'm on a wild goose chase.

Thanks,

Try www.surfcontrol.com < http://www.surfcontrol.com>

It's a pretty decent product that allows you to track AND block activity.

You can also get a free 30 day trial. Perhaps if your owner sees it action
the price tag will make some sense.

I just got a quote from our CDW rep. $1,118 for 50 users.

I also pulled a 2 hour sample report from our SonicWall (cut/paste into Excel from screen data). I had to Tracert all the IP addresses to detemrine correct username but the report looks pretty good and shows the highest MB data transfer users in that time slot. Good enough so that if we run for a week and attach to a memo to employees to let them know volume can be monitored. If it continues to be a problem we can weigh cost/benefit of SurfControl. We don't use proxy service. Main problem is it shows ME as by FAR the highest user due to big web site changes I'm uploading and refining today.

My thanks again to Noble Hudson for the SonicWall tip, it worked out very well and free.
