We use iPrism by St. Bernard Software,
It's an appliance which includes software so you don't need an additional PC
& operating system to run it on.
It sits right after the firewall.
It will block sites by category and breaks every thing into about 60 groups
such as nudity, sports, retail, etc...
You pay a maintenance fee for updates for the database and software which
are all done automatically in the wee hours at a time you select. It's
probably pricier than just software but is pretty much hassle free. You
access the appliance with a web browser for administration and for reports.

We use Surf Control http://www.pnltools.com
You can specify where users can and cannot go on the web.
Also can generate a user log using canned reports or create your
own using Crystal Reports.

It works well for us.
CA - eTrust ....

Tracks all Internet usage +++ all emails.

It's really scary what you will see going on all day. Especially on the
email side.

Going into the subject a year ago my main concern was web browsing. After 1
day I realized the real battle was on the email side. We had users writing
10 page email letters to friends and family plus porn images plus generally
stupid email attachments as executables.

Write up a good company policy regarding both and MAKE every employee sign
it. Keep it simple ... something like "Internet access and Internet email
are provided to the employees to be used for company purposes only.
Personal usage will result in termination."

Then be prepared for some very cranky employees who object to anyone
watching what they are doing on "Their" PC's.

If you want more info email me off list ...

Good Luck !

We use Surfcontrol. Works great. Not only does it report, it lets you allow
or deny specific access for different groups of users.

Do you want to control where they can go, or do you just want to report? If
you just want reporting, you might be able to get the information you need
from your proxy or firewall software.

Janet,

We use Surfcontrol. I love it! It can monitor both Internet and email. It has many, many useful reports built right into it.

We first implemented it back in March just for fun without anybody knowing that we were monitoring. Wholly cow!! I saw some of my coworkers going to some very interesting sites that I never thought they would go to. Then we let everyone know that we were going to monitor, and suddenly the bad activity stopped. Hmmm! Imagine that!

Janet,

Check your local laws and tread lightly.
Monitors can be a good thing and protect your company.
BUT
They can turn around and bite you if you don't follow the rules.

Here in Delaware they have just passed a law which states:

If your company monitors Internet usage, Email, IM Phone calls, etc. you must give your employee an official document informing them that you intend to monitor such communication.
And keep a signed copy of the employees signed acknowlegment of receipt.

-- and --

You must also notify the employee atleast once per day electronically.

If you are curious

http://www.legis.state.de.us/BillTracking

Search for House Bill 539
Also review the link at the bottom of the page Called Substitute bill which ammends the Bill "allowing" daily notification.
