Has the laptop ever operated through a Proxy Server? I used to have this
issue on some PCs that formerly connected to internet via proxy server prior
to our firewall being installed. You might want to look at the installed
programs and see if there in a proxy client program hanging around and if so
remove it.

Hi,

I have installed a new firewall device and everyone can connect to internet
except for one laptop system. It has IE 6 on it and is properly configured.
I can ping sites such as yahoo, msn, Microsoft. But for some reason the
explorer will not resolve and legitimize the connection keeps coming up as
not found or DNS error. Any thoughts as to what I can try next? I'm at my
wits end with it right now.

We had a similar issue. If you run DHCP then try doing an ipconfig /release
and then an ipconfig /renew. You said your settings all looked correct but
have you done an ipconfig /all and checked your DNS and Gateway settings?
Just a thought

What OS?

Check your DNS settings. We've had odd behaviour when switching ISP's that computers with the OLD DNS settings for the former ISP will work. Then one day they just stop. Clearing out the old DNS settings and entering the correct ones cleaned things up.

Do the systems use DHCP to set their TCP/IP parameters? Are you ping-ing
by name or IP number? I'd bet the misbehaving PC is using an old
statically set DNS server address instead of getting it via
DHCP. Use IPCONFIG /ALL or WINIPCFG to check the settings and compare
with a working machine. Or if ping by name works, see it IE is set to use
a proxy server or has "automatically detect settings" disabled (both under
Options / Connection / Advanced).
