I'm hoping the vast knowledge on this list can help me out. Our file
server is several years old and is starting to get full but a new server
is not in the budget at this time. Right now we have RAID 5 setup with
three 18 GB hard drives and there is not any room to add additional hard
drives. I was wondering how stupid of an idea would it be to just
attach an USB 2.0 external hard drive until a new server can be bought?
Any insight or other suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Mark

Ron,

I've only been hear for about 7 months so I'm not sure but I would guess
3 years. I don't think anything has been archive since they got it. So
I did ask our engineers for their opinions on which drawings could be
archived and it didn't add up to much. We are producing more 3D
drawings and it's eating up space quicker.

Mark:
The only reason I asked----we have almost the same
equipment---except--we have both Vantage and the old
Software (Guardian) running on the same one. Not good. In
fact...the Server is running at 100%.......
I am trying to get the company to purchase a new server for
Vantage.....not sure if I can....but we cann't go
live on this old server. My thoughts would be-----if the Management
decides not to get a new server for you---I
would recommend stop adding drawings that are eating up the space.
It's sort of "one or the other"
Good Luck....I'll share with you what happens here.

If your server is running a recent version of Windows server you can enable
folder compression on the folders that aren't used very often. If you have
lots of compressible data (like CAD drawings) then this will save a fair bit
of space. There is some processor overhead in using file compression
however in my experience this is minimal for occasionally used files.

Also check the machine for massive log file directories, backup and
temporary files and windows patch uninstall files, all of these can take up
quite a bit of disk space. Defragmenting the hard disks should also free up
a bit more space.

If your going to attach a USB external drive, why not move old data to that unit so you can free up some space on your server. That way you don't have readily accessed data on that unit. Might help on the speed issue

I think it would just be slow, not stupid.

Also, are you using Solidworks or Autocad?

External references are usually hard wired to directory/file locations.

So, if you move part of your files to a new drive, you might get errors when you open an assembly in CAD.

Bruce,

Thanks for the suggestion about the back up files, I wasn't aware of
that, but you were right. I did a quick search for *.bak and its
finding a lot.

We are using AutoCad. I was hoping speed would be the only issue. If I
do it I would leave all the CAD files on the internal disks and move our
user folder and sales folders (mainly just docs, speed would be less an
issue) to the external drive. That would free up quite a bit of room
for new drawings on the original drives until we can get a new file
server.

Two things
#1 I agree with the autocad backup files
I wrote a batch file to execute and delete all BAK files on our
engineering share before it does my tape backup

#2. Is spending no $$ in the budget
I assumed that you were going to spend some money if you were getting
a usb hard drive.
Look on IOMEGA's web site. THey sell alot of refurbished equipment
and at one time they were selling a RAID 5 STORAGE server (Like a NAS)
for like $400

Just a thought
