Thank you for your response, Rob.
I too, felt that we need to re-evaluate our material handling processes, and was looking for some type of aid in the system to help them. At this point, I'm not finding a good method in Vantage to help manage that. I do like your ideas about the date coded labels, which is easily done, and "feed from the back/pull from the front" and will see if that is something we can accomplish, at least in some areas, because we absolutely need to find a way to improve our process.
So, I certainly appreciate your help!

Subject: Re: [Vantage] OT: FIFO Inventory
v9 may support systemic FIFO for costing and inventory valuation, but no system (that is not inherently & tightly lot controlled based) solves the equally important physical material handling process changes required to truly BE FIFO.
Your inventory storage needs to set up so it can be fed with just received inventory from the back and the oldest inventory picked from the front. You can reinforce the 'pick oldest 1st' process by labeling all your receipts with date coded labels. (Add the source job, transfer order or PO line/release number to those labels and you have psuedo lot control without the backflush inhibitions of systemic lot control).
Focus on the physical material handling processes (largely storage layout design & 'people processes') 1st (or the system will just be an inaccurate model of your reality).
As for systemic FIFO, I've never used a system that (with a little thought) couldn't be manipulated to do FIFO'ish cost and inventory valuation OUTSIDE the system (and then have these values pushed back into the system on some recurring basis).
That includes v8.

Will not fix your problem today but Epicor 9 has FIFO inventory.

Subject: [Vantage] OT: FIFO Inventory
Hi Group:
We're looking for methods that other companies use within or outside of
Vantage to make sure you are using the oldest inventory stock first.
(We can't use lot tracking, due to backflushing) . I'm even looking for
ideas - possibly like methods of marking boxes/containers to easily see
oldest stock, or things like that. Being on 6.1, it doesn't seem like
there is an easy way to do this. I thought of showing a date on the
warehouse/bin location, but since we have locations in our warehouses
where parts typically are stored, any moves to that location would
invalidate the date of a previous load anyway.
So, other than material handlers always looking up where parts are
stored and shuffling them around when they put them away, are there any
other ideas/suggestions out there? All thoughts are welcomed!
