[OT] Exchange 5.5 Internet Relay & Outlook 2000 Attachment Filt

Jim Moore sent it originally but I got it to work by cut/paste the parts of the address into the browser addressline. For some reason Yahoo wrapped it and lost the tail end (all the way to the .HTML part). Otherwise go to http://www.msexchange.org and click on the Articles & Tutorials link in the menu at left side.

Thanks very much for the link (printing the page now). This looks very much
like the steps I took on Exchange 5.0 but could not recall how to do.

Two issues with email - one led me to the other....

1. User is having .zip files stripped off of inbound email from a customer. Although Symantec AV on the server filters most attachments I must allow .zip files due to customer volume. Even with .exe and others they get quarantined not deleted. I KNOW for certain .zip files are allowed yet one user receives only an attached .txt file with a message that the attached file was deleted by the "antivirus service". All of our Symantec AV notifications spell out "Symantec AV" as the source. I suspect the problem is at the sending end want to rule out the user's Outlook 2000 before I accuse a customer. As far as I know Outlook2K does not have the ability to strip out attachments. Right?

2. While investigating #1 I see on our Exchange 5.5 server that there is a large number of SMTP queues with strange names that look suspiciously like spam sources. While investigating further I see that Internet Relay seems to be set up - if I am reading the Help screens correctly. Anonomous access is check marked so in theory anyone can send thru our server. I unchecked anonomous and all the sudden external email stopped coming in. Any hints how to be sure we are not an inadvertant relay? Are those SMTP queues normal? While I was digging around I set the limit on recipients in outbound messages from 64,000 down to 100 - since we are not a spammer no harm in that right?

Thanks,

Tried the renaming (to .zix) and it did not work.
But...I've confirmed issue is on sending end by emailing myself from a yahoo mail account a .zip file. Also emailed same .zip to my user. Both received fine. User now 'fesses up to their org blocking ALL attachments no matter how they are named but neglecting to tell their users who were sending us .zip after .zip and thinking we had a problem at our end. Customers....I guess you just have to put up with them. ;)

Also, (sheepish embarased grin) we are on Exchange 2000 not 5.5 (my mind is going, I can feel it) but the main site Jim sent a link for has a similar article for Ex2K - plus as it turns out several more dynamite Exchange topics, well worth checking out.

Todd,

I'll 2nd Jim's weblink on 5.5 - did exactly that on mine to stop relaying.

On the 1st issue - suggest that then sender rename his attachments to
*.zipsave before sending. You can rename them back to *.zip on receipt.
