OT: Disk Imaging

I didn't want to use Ghost because of the cost, I found DiskImage XML, an
open source (Freeware) solution.
You will need to create a Windows PE Disk, Bart PE, google for it and then
use Sysprep as others have mentioned.
Cost =$0.0 : Time saved =$Priceless.

One link I found for it is http://www.runtime.org/dixml.htm

People
You sysprep the original computer that you make the image from. The
when you fire up the imaged computer the first time it requests the
Microsoft 25 character code. Sysprep was made for just this thing. SID's
are then not an issue.

It has been a couple years since I used Ghost but the process required
was.

* Take PC off network

* Install Ghost Image

* Rename Computer

* Place back on network.

* The computers were all different brands and models. So it was
then required to get all of the correct hardware drivers, including the
customary re-boot for each driver.

The new Ghost might be better. It took about 1 hour per computer and
was much better than installing all software from scratch.

I have never used it but I believe the company that created
PartitionMagic also has Image Copy software.

Hope this helps,

Dale

John,

There are SID issues with ghgosting machines, but there is a product
called "Ghost Walker" (I think they still call it that) that will go
thru and change the SIDs.

As far as licensing goes, you pay for the number of PCs that will
connect to the ghost "server" at one time. It doesnt matter how many
times you use the image.

Hope that helps
Jeff

Hello,

We are getting ready to purchase some computers to put on the shop floor
to run MES/Data Collection (V8).

The computers will all be identical and I would like to create a disk
image for ease of recovery in the event of a system failure.

Is anyone doing something similar and if so, what imaging software are
you using?

Thanks,

Joe,

for what is is worth............I have used Norton Ghost. It can be
centrally managed which is nice when you need to put the image back on
a computer that needs to be rebuilt. I am not sure what the price is.
You can usually "build" a computer in about 20 minutes.

Jeff
Ghost, now owned by Symantec will make life easy. I used to set up
networks at auto dealerships and I would need 30 to 100 alike computers.
Make a master. Store the image and blast the image onto the new
computers in like 20 min each. Course we did it eight computers at a
time from a dedicated server.

Hi to everyone,

Sorry I am naive but what about license issues.

If you use the same image for X number of computers what happens?

Don't you run into issues with the SID etc.

Thanks,

John,

Windows has a sysprep function to deal with SIDs. I think you need a
ghost license for every PC you intend to ghost.

Hi Jeff,

If you make multiple images, don't they phone home.

And wouldn't there be a Microsoft issue.

I would like to learn more about "Ghost Walker".

I assume I can Google it .

Thanks for your input,

Joe:
For what its worth, Terminal Server and Citrix thin client terminals
are perfect for data collection and manufacturing area stations. You
definately will reduce your time dealing with PC maintenance issues.
There are also several touch screen and barcode thin clients available
as well.
Terminal Server and Citrix are great solutions throughout the
corporate office as well. You must definately understand the
limitations of thin client computing, but if it is deployed properly
it definately reduces your Cost of Ownership and frees you up to work
on other projects. TS and Citrix also are perfect for remote
connectivity and multi-plant situations as well.

To handle the SID issue, remove the PC from the domain and run the
sysprep utility before creating your image, it will erase the SID and
launch a mini setup prompting you for a machine name and if you wish to
join a domain.

You can use Walker which comes with Ghost but sysprep is better IMO.
