There's a Dimension 2400 listed for $349 [after rebate.] I bumped the hard
drive up to a 7200rpm unit for an extra $10. Probably want to select "no
ISP" to cut down on pre-installed garbage.

I was also questioning the chipset yesterday. I studied up at Intel.com
and that 845GV it uses has integrated graphics [ok - for what I'd be doing
today] but NO add-on AGP video capability. Unless you're running games or
cad/cam that needs a fast 3D video board, It'll probably suffice. But I
hate not having the option to upgrade.

They've got a sweet deal on a Dimension 2400, too. For $359 (after rebate)
it adds all this over the 400SC (I opted for the $10 fast hard drive):

P4 2.5GHz
256MB
Optical USB mouse
Win XP home (uuhhh... free bird cage liner???)
48x CD-RW
Sound Blaster card
Modem

17" crt available for another $100, speakers for $20 if you want bling.

I guess it doesn't have the SATA of the 400SC. Chipset is Intel
845GV. Haven't kept current on all Intel's numbers -- is that decent?

The 2400 has shared memory with the integrated video. This really drags
down performance if you do anything with pictures, newsletters and/or games.
One of the sales guys here bought one for his wife to use. The first time
he tried to tweak a PowerPoint presentation he was working on he discovered
what "shared" memory really means. The overall specs are not bad but you
have to watch what you intend to do with it.

My home office computer is getting long in the tooth. The 400sc looks like
a good deal since I can pull some of the newer peripherals from the old
beast and install them into the new box. A decent video card and I am good
to go for the demanding work stuff (CAD, PowerPoint, video editing) as well
as the occasional game.
