Ot choose between Norton AV and Nod32

I did not do extensive research on the prices until I had made a decision.
Then I started looking for the best price. I very well may have found the
price on a web site, or from a quick conversation with a rep.
The information is also several months old and was intended only to help me
make the initial decision. The overwhelming support for Trend and it's
price with no negative responses, and my previous experience with products
made the decision fairly clear for me.
Sorry for any misinformation. None was intended.

I'm curious on your pricing for eTrust. I've been getting the 5 user packs
for $115 so 15 users would be $345.

Granted - not at cheap as Trend but still 25% less then listed below. (but
remember - CA does not force you to pay annual extortion fees to keep
getting updates. AV updates are available until the product goes end of
life - which is usually several years).

My gripe with eTrust - is not the software, or the pricing - its the way CA
handles all their licensing and registering.
Sometime you have to type in a Key Code, sometimes you need to run a
register program, if you follow the directions - the register program is
where they say it is and you have to go on a "disk safari" to find it. Same
is true for most of their products. Most of the time the instructions
included with the product are wrong - most irritating.

So as long as the don't change the way the software works (or the pricing) -
I'm very happy with it.

Charles

We use Nod32 here and wouldn't change.
Priced better and have been virus free for over a year. Has blocked
everything that has come thru not the case with Symantec which we replaced.

Since I would choose my mom with a Kleenex over Norton/Symantec . Nod32
must be ok. We use Trend Server Protect. Kapersky and Panda are also ok.

IMHO, spyware/malware is much more dangerous than viruses. We have had very
few virus issues here and most were cured easily. I filter email using
ClamAV and we have CA eTrust running on the server and desktops. The eTrust
product never has to do anything because ClamAV catches it first, it's just
a backup.

Spyware on the other hand has destroyed machines here. Don't forget to
address this problem.

I would stay away from Norton. It's too bulky and eats up the resources on
the your computers.

We use the much maligned Symantec Corporate with ample success. That
being said, it's pretty much the software equivalent of the Maytag
Repair Man on our network. We prefer to catch the malicious code at
the perimiter. We use FortiGate
Firewall/AV/NIDS/Spyware/Malware/Spam filter device and have yet to
have our internal software even register a quarantine in over 2 years.

Our Sales department, all on their own, decided that the email system
needed changing. Tuesday they told me that it was being implemented
for all salary tomorrow. I was excluded from this process. At the
moment we're in neutral corners, but the bell rings for the final
round tomorrow. Sales built a web page and the host has web mail so
they thought it was a good idea to change the infrastructure.

We have used Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition for 8 years and have had great success with it. I have no trouble with resource issues and by integrating the Counsel the administration is hands off.

I'll second that. Version 10 is a huge improvement and includes anti-spyware (but we also use CE-eTrust PestPatrol). We have never had an infection other than once when our live update subscription ran out for 2 weeks without my noticing and a new bug snuck in. Not the product's fault for that. The Exchange email scanning and filtering is really nice to since it can double as spam filtering and it actually catches a few things ORF misses. I'm not familiar with Nod32 so if it is good and is cheaper go for it. But for us SAV Corp. has not been a bad product.

So when/if the internet is down they have no e-mail whatsoever?.? With an e-mail server if the internet is down you can still e-mail internally.

Security. All their e-mails can be read by the hosting party.

Guess I'll third that...
We've had Symantec Corporate AV for 2+ years (v8, v9 and now v10). We have
not had any problems with it on our 37 computers (Windows XP and 98).
Overall, I highly recommend it.

Based on our customers' demands we could never use remote hosted email - not secure enough for highly sensitive engineering info and proprietary documents. What is the "root" issue? If it is remote accessibility products like Exchange with Outlook Web Access would allow them email access from anywhere. And if you wanted to incorporate PDA access (like Blackberries with the Enterprise Server) can the remote service support this? Your hands (and future options) will be tied technologically. Nope, I think I would be screaming to the highest authorities to take a hard look at all the ramifications. Sounds like the sales people have been "sold".

Not that cost as ever been an issue... I'll stick with FreeBSD Unix,
Sendmail, ClamAV and SPAMAssassin; enable https webmail add an alias table
and a access.db hash table for black and white listing -- total cost $0.00
...knowing I have NO Microsoft product on my border PRICELESS!

Internal mail is routed via Exchange Server mainly for the global calendars
and contacts. Incoming and outgoing email is routed through Sendmail via
Exchange. Symantec Enterprise has been golden for us for years if anything
happens to get through the UNIX layered defenses. Heck, I even have CAVA
running as a tertiary defense on all the EMC FileSystems...

"Extremism in the defense of data is no vice!"

Shirley are you forwarding all email support calls to Sales?
