[OT] Changing filename to linked file in Access

Brian,
I'm using Access 2000. They must have moved it to the other menu somewhere along the way.

Thanks for your help.

Sorry Troy,

We must be using different versions of Access. We're still using 97.

Troy,

If you wish to maintain the same links and queries while still being
able to change the underlying Excel data, you must be sure to maintain
the same filename, pathname and file structure for the Excel files.
In other words, your columns and cell content formats must remain
the same. You can create empty Excel files with the needed formatting
and leave them in the folder as placeholders for Access.

Sometimes even then Access while turn up its nose at the data if it has
been refreshed, and you will have to relink. If you're not afraid of
a little VBA, here's something that will get you started:

I just wish there was somewhere in the access that stored the filename of the linked excel file, and then you could go in and just change the filename and path instead of re-linking, etc.

The VB code you mentioned looks interesting for some other scenarios, however.

Troy,

Have you tried using the Linked Table manager in Access? It's still
kind of a hassle, but probably not as bad as what you're facing now.
You'll find it under Tools -> Add-ins. It will allow you to keep the
same table in Access and point it to an new Excel file/Location.

Hope that helps.

You can do this with VBA Code. There is a code example on Microsoft's
website. I also believe I seen it as part of the northwinds database (In
Modules). If I remember correctly, it checks to see that a linked database
is still present in the same location, if not then it prompt for a new
database location to update the MSObjests table.

Brian,
When I go to Tools -> Add-ins, all I see is "Add-Ins Manager" and "Crystal Report Wizard". How do I add the Linked Table manager to the Add-ins?

(and for that matter, why does the "Crystal Report Wizard" ask me for a database password?)

ACC2000: How to Remove Linked ( Attached) Tables Using a Macro
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Access 2000

This article was previously published under Q209730
Novice: Requires knowledge of the user interface on single-user computers.

This article applies to a Microsoft Access database (.mdb) and to a
Microsoft Access project (.adp).

SUMMARY
The TransferDatabase action is the macro equivalent of the Link Tables
command. However, Microsoft Access does not have an action to delete a link
to a linked (attached) table. To remove a linked table from the Database
window, select the table in the Database window, and then press the DELETE
key. You can also create a macro to delete a link to a linked table, or you
can call the action from Visual Basic code by using the DoCmd statement or
the RunMacro method.
MORE INFORMATIONTo delete a link to a linked table, create the following
macro, and then save it as RemoveTable:

Action: DeleteObject
Object Type: Table
Object Name: MyTable

Use a DoCmd statement or the RunMacro method to run the RemoveTable macro as
follows:
DoCmd.RunMacro "RemoveTable"

ACC2000:
How to Use the Seek Method on Linked Tables
The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Access 2000

This article was previously published under Q210266
Advanced: Requires expert coding, interoperability, and multiuser skills.

This article applies only to a Microsoft Access database (.mdb).

SUMMARY
Although you cannot use the Seek method directly on a linked (attached)
Microsoft Access table, by using Visual Basic for Applications, you can
create a workaround. This article demonstrates a sample user-defined Sub
procedure that you can use to link a Microsoft Access table and describes
how to use the Seek method to locate specified records.

For this code to run properly, you must reference the Microsoft DAO 3.6
Object Library. To do so, click References on the Tools menu in the Visual
Basic Editor, and make sure that the Microsoft DAO 3.6 Object Library check
box is selected.

To use the Seek method on a linked table from the sample database
Northwind.mdb, follow these steps:

Create a new database and name it Db1.mdb.
On the File menu, click Get External Data, and then click Link Tables.
Select the Northwind.mdb file, and then click Link.
In the Link Tables dialog box, select Orders, and then click OK.
Create a module, and then type the following line in the Declarations
section if the line is not already there:

Option Explicit

Type or paste the following procedure:NOTE: In the following sample code, an
underscore (_) at the end of a line is used as a line-continuation
character.
Sub Seek_Attached_Table(Tablename, Indexname, SearchValue)
Dim db As Database
Dim t As TableDef
Dim rs As DAO.Recordset
Dim dbpath, SourceTable

On Error GoTo SA_Errors

Set db = DBEngine(0)(0)
dbpath = Mid(db(Tablename).connect, InStr(1, _
db(Tablename).connect, "=") + 1)
If dbpath = "" Then MsgBox "You've chosen a table already in the current
database", 64, "": Exit Sub

SourceTable = db(Tablename).sourcetablename

Set db = DBEngine(0).OpenDatabase(dbpath)
Set rs = db.OpenRecordset(SourceTable, DB_OPEN_TABLE)
rs.Index = Indexname
rs.Seek "=", SearchValue

Else
MsgBox "Not Found", 64
End If

rs.Close
db.Close

Exit Sub
SA_Errors:
MsgBox Error, 16, CStr(Err)
Exit Sub

End Sub

To run the Sub procedure, type the following line in the Immediate window,
and then press ENTER:
Seek_Attached_Table "Orders","PrimaryKey",11000

Note that the message "Found It!" appears.
REFERENCESFor more information about linking tables, click Microsoft Access
