OT (Bad Boot Sector)

Thanks every one for the inputs ran chkdsk on the hard drive and it booted
just fine. I plan on downloading the disk diognostics soon. I believe a
new hard drive is in my future though. For the short term I am recovered.

Thanks again,

Wayne

You shouldn't have to reinstall, it should be pretty painless. There were
some other suggestions that were very good too, like getting a drive utility
from the HD manufacturer (hopefully its Maxtor) here is another trick if
you feel ambitious. Slave your drive to a system that has Crystal Reports,
and browse to the event logs (C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\SysEvent.Evt) In
Crystal start a new report go in under MORE DATA SOURCES then browse to NT
ARCHIVED DATA SOURCES then browse to the above path. VIOLA you can pull out
all your system errors. This works on active event logs too, (actually you
can access any system on your network)

Shirley,

Just so I know what I am up against. Will I need to do a complete reinstall
after I run fixboot?

Also, is this problem being created by updates writing to bad boot sectors?
Once I get the system back should I run scandisk or related utilities?

If you have memory that you know is good try swapping out the memory. Also,
you can try pulling the drive and slaving it to a good system to test and
run fixdisk or some other repair. Also get a win98 boot disk to boot from
floppy and try and fix from that. Go here

Most drive manufacturers have a non-destructive drive diagnostic. Find out
your drive's manufacturer then go to their website to download the utility.
Usually, creates a bootable floppy. Insert floppy and go.

Hope that helps.

Bad Boot sector indicates a problem with the drive itself. You need to
mark those sectors as bad (scandisk/checkdisk). If you get a clean
install of windows XP, you should be able to run a scan disk/check disk
and mark sectors as being bad. Windows should try and move all data off
of the bad sector (sometimes it can, sometimes it cant) At least those
sectors will be marked as bad and nothing will get written to them.

You can also try downloading a hard drive utility from the manufacturer
of the drive. These utilities will have programs that will help
diagnose and fix drive problems.

Go here
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-
us/bootcons_fixboot.mspx for some repair instructions.

Hi group,

Sorry for the off topic post but if anybody knows the answer it will be
here!

I was having a problem with my DSL connection to the internet my and could
not fix the problem. I dumped the system and re-installed XP and the DSL
connections and all was fine.

Reregistered the OS with MicroSoft and down loaded all the latest updates.
Happy as a clam, Retired for the night. NExt day turned on the computer
and......

Blue screen of death, "Bad Boot Sector Windows is shutting down to prevent
damage. Nothing I tried Safe Mode, Windows Repair, etc. worked.

Started over. All was fine again until updates were loaded. Shut down,
start up and same thing happened.

Do I have a flakey hard drive or is something in one of the latest patches
that does not agree with XP Home edition. Yes sorry this is a home computer.

Any help is appreciated.

Wayne

Wayne,

I'd run the diagnostics first - no sense reloading the OS if the drive is
toast.

(of course this assumes you have access to another computer to pull down the
program and make the floppy)

Modern ATA/IDE drives should not have any bad sectors visible to the
operating system. The drive will automatically detect them and remap
them to a pool of spare sectors and move the data. By the time you
start seeing bad sectors on an IDE drive it is in REALLY bad shape.

Running the drive manufacturer's diagnostics is a good suggestion. I
also like to zero out the whole drive, or at least the first
tracks. Google for: IBM "wipe.com" "zap.com" -- these are nice
little dos utilities that will zero a whole drive, or just the first
few critical sectors.

But probably the BEST ADVICE -- buy a new drive and trash that
one. 80GB drives are $50 or $60. Time is more valuable.

Charles,

I don't think the drive is toast. After the first time. I didn't bother
reconnecting the DSL line for about a week and a half so no updates were
made. My little one just wanted it to play SIM's so I got it back enough
for her to do that.

So after about 7-10 days of no problems I set up the DSL registerd th
software, installed updates, and BAM it did it again.
