OT - Backup Software

Take a look at NovaStor. We migrated there about a year ago and have been quite pleased.

Subject: [Vantage] RE: OT - Backup Software

Thanks everyone for the information. Seems as good as some of the options are, they won't satisfy all of my requirements. Veeam and PHD Virtual can't deal with physical machines, AppAssure can't backup to tape. I guess that's why Backup Exec still has a strong presence in the market.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I'm about ready to blow my brains out with Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3.  I have been resistant to upgrade to 2012 from all of the negative comments about the poorly designed approach with 2012 as it is, but our current version is just so unreliable, I need to do something before I really need to restore something.  Backup times vary wildly, agents will lockup, who knows if the backup will be successful day to day.  We are a simple shop, using a single LTO4 SCSI drive connected directly to the BE host.  We are a Hyper-V house with only 4 physical servers and roughly 10 virtual machines.  We have Exchange and SQL and BE agents for each.

I guess I'm looking for advice of what works for others.  Searching the web, I find more sales propaganda than actual facts.  I want to continue to use a local, software only system using our existing LTO4 drive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tim

Ahhh…. yes.

I use Carbonite.  Been very happy with it overall. Some minor complaints, but nothing major.

However, I also do an online backup of my db 2 other times per day and shuttle copies of that to a USB 3.0 thumb drive and a NAS in another building.

I learned last autumn that it pays to have as much redundancy as possible.

I use Dell Appassure.  Its over priced and not what I would consider a refined product, but it has gotten better.

Pros:  Web interface.  Fast incremental backups and you can do a full restore from any backup point (full or incremental).  Application aware including MS SQL, Exchange, Hyper-V, and VMware.  Bare metal restores even to dissimilar hardware.

Cons: Web interface (yes, its both a pro and con), price, clients can be somewhat unstable, specially on Windows XP.  Backups only to drives, not tape.  No way to exclude files or folders from the backup, only whole partitions can be backed up.  Although you can restore individual files, mailboxes, folders, etc.  Relies on Microsoft's VSS.

Hello,
Maybe Veeam might be worth looking at for you hyperv environment.

Cheers
Simon Hall

We are very happy with PHD Virtual for our vmWare environment and it not supports Hyper-V.  It is reasonable priced and can be archived to tape and cloud storage as well.

Ahhh….

Subject: [Vantage] OT - Backup Software

Tim

Thanks everyone for the information.  Seems as good as some of the options are, they won't satisfy all of my requirements.  Veeam and PHD Virtual can't deal with physical machines, AppAssure can't backup to tape.  I guess that's why Backup Exec still has a strong presence in the market.
