[OT] Antivirus

eTrust from Computer Assoicates for the desktops & servers & pdas (a node is
a node licensing - workstation is the same as server - runs on windows, mac,
linux etc) One time cost - no annual extortion charges. Very reasonable -
5 licenses $105.

Use McAfee webshield on all inbound email.

my 2 bits,

Charles

We have Symantec Corporate version 9 and it's really saved our tails
recently. There is a bit of configuration to exclude scanning of the
Vantage files or it will slow down your login time down a bit. Otherwize it
quarantines files or cleans them automatically and we can see that from a
console and do the management from a central point. It auto updates from
our server every night and seems to do a good job.

I just went to a seminar about security and Trend Micro was there to
demo their product and I was very impressed with them. I currently use
Symantec myself but when the license runs out I am thinking of switching
myself. One good selling point for them is if you are using and Cisco
switches or routers their product integrates with it very well.

We are running Symantec Corporate 8.5 and on several occasions Symantec
did not find a virus that I found by running Trend Micro free house call
from their website. From talking with other people they have had the
opposite problem were they are running Trend Micro and Trend Micro does
not find a virus that Symantec does. So I guess what I am saying is
pick your poison.

I know some people think it is over priced but I really like the Symantec suite as well. We never received the 9.0 CD and now I am waiting for the version 10 CD. 8.6 has some quirky bugs in the Exchange Filtering part where you can filter on words in subject as a secondary spam filtering (but it overfilters on wildcards). 10 has many new features including anti-spyware components. The basic anti-virus has been rock solid for us allowing in 5 years only one actual infection which turned out to be a "day zero" incident before the scheduled noontime pattern refresh. Managing quarantined items is very easy incase a particular attached file is blocked but the user really needs it.

From my experiences with McAfee at home I'll never touch another product from them. Impossible to install without major headaches and really poor support. Online message boards are bloated with messages from people with the same bad experiences. Perhaps their corporate products are better.

I tested several A/V packages and went with Trend Micro Client/Server
Suite for SMB as in my opinion it is a superior product. If you're
running exchange as well then this is the ticket as it scans your
mailbox store(s). Additionally, it has an http interface for ease of
management including remote install, on demand scan options, anti-spy
ware signatures, content control and client queries which include any
identified threats, last update date and time, etc.

We have eTrust and in my opinion is head and shoulders above the Norton and
Mcafee products, but they only serve as backups.

The best bang for the buck on virus protection is using ClamAV on our mail
server. All of our mail is scanned prior to reaching the recipient. The
best part is ClamAV is open sourced.

The biggest threat we face is people using MSIE and malware attacks.

We've been using the Trend Micro "Neat Suite" for a couple years now. This suite of products includes ScanMail for the Exchange Server, Server Protect to protect the servers and Office Scan for desktop coverage. I like the web based central console that shows status of clients, allows you to remote install, etc.

It's been a great product for us.

Aaron,

I will keep banging the drum for Eset NOD32.
This A/V software really takes the load off older computers. (they run
faster, we were running Norton)
It runs like a champ. (We have never had a problem)
Has both Standard (individual) and Administrator versions. As well as
versions for multiple OS's
NOD32 has just released their latest version which now includes anti
spyware/adware
I havent upgraded to this version yet, as it just came out.

Since we switched to NOD half of the employees in our offices have
removed Norton and McAfee from their home PC's and installed NOD32.

If you want to buy it for home its $39
Or $1595 for 50 seats plus fileserver and email server licenses. (for 1
year) according to the literature.

I payed about $1200 for 2 years because I "upgraded" from Norton Corporate.

I personally get a higher level of comfort when it tells me it has had
its virus definitions updated 2 times inside 3 hours.

www.nod32.com

In my opinion this is the best A/V software that nobody knows about, but
should.

Regards

Rich

Just for thought...

I have been STRUGGLING with Symantec for months trying to get the
Brightmail Spam Filter with Anti-Virus to work. The spam filter they
have (Brightmail) is fabulous for our company (30 email users). The
problem is that after the trial ran out they sold me the package, and
then antivirus stopped working. After weeks of trying to get a hold
of someone (30 min at a time on hold) I finally got through and they
told me I needed to buy Antivirus 9.0 corporate. I was pretty mad
considering what I originally bought only had half of what they told
me it had, (no antivirus) and I had to cough up more bucks for this
Antivirus 9.0.

Needless to say it didnt work. Took weeks again to get through and
they told me they sold me the wrong thing and to call Symantec sales
for the "Antivirus add-on for Brightmail". I called and can you
believe it... heres what they told me. "We don't carry such a
product." They don't even know what they make and sell!!! Needless
to say I am still without the antivirus part of brightmail (its been
months without support). Even though the product, when it was working
was FABULOUS, I refuse to give Symantec any money, and I am
encouraging the same with others.

Ditto's on NOD32 here also. Has caught everything that has come thru and
haven't had a melt down in 2 years. Not the case with Norton previously.
Good feature is the small footprint for the program, doesn't slow anything
down. Great product at a decent price.

In my opinion this is the best A/V software that nobody knows about, but
should.

Regards

Rich

Sorry to hear about the difficulty with Symantec. I've had my share of administrative and sales issues with them but now run all dealings through CDW. They seem to have a better handle on what's up (or clout with Symantec's sales dept.). Sounds like Brightmail was a separate product line they acquired in order to bolster their service offering with Spam filtering. I've kept the two mostly separate except for using some minor features in Symantec's Exchange Filtering as a backup. Our primary Spam filtering is Vamsoft's Open Relay Filter (ORF) ( www.vamsoft.com ) an incredible server based package for only $198 per email server ( 1 for us). Does require MS IIS-SMTP Service or Exchange 2000/2003 though. Great new feature recently added - automatic whitelisting where any address sent "to" by anyone is placed in whitelist and bypasses all other filtering. If you are using Exchange I'd really suggest looking into this and then working out some deal on trading all the junk you were sold for basic AV. Perhaps CDW could help, especially if you already use them.

Let's see...here's the arsenal:

Barracuda at the ISP for email antispam/virus. FortiGate 50A at the
perimeter for antivirus/spam/malware/ID. Norton corporate for internal
network and black ice defender on all workstations and servers. The net
result has been that the FortiGate has been so effective that Norton has
been sitting on the network like the Maytag repair man. We haven't logged a
single virus attack in over 12 months - 0 day included.

I have to agree with Todd on this one. I have also used Symantec, not the
antivirus but with other prodects and I have used CDW for them. It made a
world of difference using CDW. At first I was attempting to deal with
Symantec direct and had problems getting support. One call to my Rep at CDW
and I was on the phone with Symantec in a few minutes. My rep stayed on the
line with us until the problem resolved and actually asked questions that I
did not think of.

CDW is the best. Sometimes they are a little more but in the end it is
worth it.

Ditto's on NOD32 here also. Has caught everything that has come thru and
haven't had a melt down in 2 years. Not the case with Norton previously.
Good feature is the small footprint for the program, doesn't slow
anything down. Great product at a decent price.

Aaron,

I had a project to install Anti-virus software two years ago. I checked
online reviews and Symantec's Anti-virus was selected as the winner in 2 of
the 3 reviews that I found. I used other products from Symantec and had
good experiences. I also knew that Symantec had a large installed base
which means that potential software conflicts would be more likely to be
documented than using some of the lesser known products, thus saving me some
troubleshooting effort. I therefore chose Symantec Anti-virus corporate
edition.

We've had it running for 2 years now on 35 computers (Windows XP and 98)
without one software conflict. We did have one infection, but like Todd's
experience it was on "day zero" and was an hour before our refresh time.
Having the console to scan, check histories and check and update software
and definitions versions on any computer from my workstation has been a huge
time saver. Symantec AV does seriously slow down our older RAM deficient
Win98 computers, but I haven't noticed much performance difference on our
2.4GHz+ XP boxes.

Overall, I highly recommend it.

Good luck,

I know some people think it is over priced but I really like the Symantec
suite as well. We never received the 9.0 CD and now I am waiting for the
version 10 CD. 8.6 has some quirky bugs in the Exchange Filtering part
where you can filter on words in subject as a secondary spam filtering (but
it overfilters on wildcards). 10 has many new features including
anti-spyware components. The basic anti-virus has been rock solid for us
allowing in 5 years only one actual infection which turned out to be a "day
zero" incident before the scheduled noontime pattern refresh. Managing
quarantined items is very easy incase a particular attached file is blocked
but the user really needs it.

From my experiences with McAfee at home I'll never touch another product
from them. Impossible to install without major headaches and really poor
support. Online message boards are bloated with messages from people with
the same bad experiences. Perhaps their corporate products are better.

Subject: [Vantage] [OT] Antivirus

I have had several opinions that I have shared with the group in the past
about Antivirus solutions. I am looking for simple good, bad comments on
three competitors.
Norton AV Corporate.
Trend Micro Client/Server Suite for SMB.
MCAFEE VIRUSSCAN SMB.
I will make a decision in the next 24 to 48 hours, so please (for the sake
of the group) don't respond after 5/26/05.
Thanks for any input either on or off list.
